PARTS INFORMATION
PROCEDURE
Always replace BOTH buttons at the same time.
1. Follow the instructions in Group 55 of the service manual and remove the HVAC control assembly.
2. Place the controller on a work bench with protection for the face plate.
NOTE:
To avoid discharging electrostatic current to the component during button replacement, follow these precautions, prior to beginning disassembly:
a) Discharge electrostatic current from your body by touching a grounding point (water pipe, building frame, ground stake, etc.).
b) Stand on a rubber mat while performing disassembly and reassembly.
c) Avoid touching any of the components, circuit traces and/or solder joints of the circuit boards.
3. Remove the temperature and mode control knobs by gently pulling on hem. Remove the nut (11 mm) and washer behind each knob.
4. Remove the five #10 Torx screws (circled) on the back cover of the HVAC controller. Using a small thin screw driver unlock the two tabs on each end of the controller base and remove the back cover.
NOTE:
All screws used to to assemble the component are the same.
5. Remove the two screws (circled) securing the green circuit board to the base. Lift the board and back cover clear of the remaining assembly.
6. Remove the two screws (circled) from the white assembly.
7. Once the last two screws are removed the white assembly can be lifted slightly and the recirculation and rear defogger buttons can be removed.
ALWAYS REPLACE BOTH BUTTONS DURING THIS REPAIR.
8. Transfer as much of the light grease as possible from the old buttons to the new as shown (a small flat blade screwdriver works well). Make sure that grease does not contaminate the installed visible surface of the buttons.
9. Install the new recirculation and rear defogger buttons. Follow steps 1 through 7 in reverse order to re-assemble and reinstall the HVAC controller.
NOTE:
The new buttons have indexing tabs and cannot be installed in the incorrect location.
CAUTION:
Some plastic components of the control assembly will be damaged if the nuts behind the TEMPERATURE and MODE knobs are overtorqued, or the Torx screws are overtightened during reassembly.
