SUBJECT:

AWC ECU REPROGRAMMING FOR DTC C161E - ELECTRIC PUMP SYSTEM

PURPOSE

Some customers may report the "SERVICE REQUIRED" or"I" light illuminated in the MID (Multi Information Display) during extremely cold weather (approx. 30° C, 22° F). Under these conditions, the AWC ECU may incorrectly detect a defective hydraulic pump due to an inaccurate estimate of the pump motor operating temperature. This TSB describes a procedure to reprogram the All-Wheel- Control (AWC) ECU with new software to prevent this condition.

NOTE:
This condition may occur only under extremely cold weather in the northern U.S. and Canada, even if there is no physical damage to the AWC pump motor.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

2008-2011 Lancer Evolution produced before 10/31/2010
2009-2011 Lancer Railiart produced before 10/31/2010
2009-2011 Lancer Sportback Ralliart produced before 10/31/2010

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT

The following equipment is needed to reprogram the AWC ECU:

^ VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface) - MB991824.
^ Laptop computer with A/C power adapter - 520924, or 547708.
^ MUT-III main harness 'A' (blue connector at the DLC end) - MB991910.
^ USB 2.0 cable - MB991827.
^ MEDIC 3 (if using MEDIC-II, download must be at M409 or higher).

If an affected vehicle has a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated and other DTCs are set in the ECM memory, follow the DTC diagnostic instructions as described in the service manual. Do not reprogram until the reason for DTC being set is corrected.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Determine if DTC161E was set during extremely cold weather (approx. -30° C, -22° F), before conducting AWC ECU reprogramming. If not, conduct normal DTC161E diagnosis.

2. Determine if the AWC ECU has already been reprogrammed.

a. From the MUT-III Main Menu, click on System Select.

b. Scroll to and select "5. ACD" (conventional manual transmission) or "6. ACD/AYC" (SST) in the System List column.

c. Select Special Function.

d. Select ECU Information.

e. If the New Software P/N (ROM ID #) displayed is the same as listed in the chart DO NOT CONTINUE WITH REPROGRAMMING. This TSB does not apply. Conduct normal C161E diagnosis.

For MEDIC 3 users only:

1. If you are using MEDIC 3 the correct database was installed with the MEDIC 3 software.

Continue with the REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE.

For MEDIC II users only:

1. Verify that MEDIC II is at Download M409 or higher by checking the bottom of the screen.

If you MEDIC-II Download is below M409, update your MEDIC-II as follows:

2. On the MEDIC-II main screen click on "Maintenance".

3. In the pop-up window click on "Download".

4. After the download completes, click on "Cancel" to clear the "Maintenance" window.

Continue with the REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE.

Scan Tool Viewer (STV) ONLY: Verify that your MUT-III has the most current version of the reprogramming database:

1. Select "Special Function", then select "ECU Reprogramming."

2. Select "Database File Display (CAN)."

3. The database version is displayed in the top right corner of the screen. Make sure the database version is N11011 or greater.

^ If the database version is N11011 or greater, reprogram the AWC ECU as described in the REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE below.

^ If the database version is less than N11011, check to see that your MUT-III version is at 24.0 or higher. If it is not at version 24.0 or higher, locate your MUT-III Scan Tool Viewer version 24.0 CD, and follow the instructions to update the laptop.

REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE

BATTERY VOLTAGE (AS MEASURED AT THE BATTERY POSTS WITHOUT ELECTRICAL
LOAD) MUST BE KEPT AT 12.4V OR HIGHER IN ORDER TO REPROGRAM THE ECM.
MEASURE THE BATTERY VOLTAGE AND CHARGE AS NECESSARY. A BATTERY CHARGER
SHOULD BE CONNECTED TO THE VEHICLE'S BATTERY DURING THE REPROGRAMMING
PROCEDURE. DO NOT ALLOW THE BATTERY CHARGER TO TIME OUT.

NOTE:
VCI Stand-alone reprogramming is not available for this procedure. The laptop and the VCI must remain connected for the entire procedure.

Connect the equipment as follows:

^ Turn the laptop computer on. If you're running on battery power and the charge indicator in the lower right hand corner of the screen does not show a full charge, it is recommended that either the laptop battery be charged prior to beginning, or that reprogramming be completed with the A/C power adaptor connected to the laptop.

^ Connect the USB cable to the VCI.

^ When the laptop displays the MUT-III main screen, connect the USB cable to the laptop.

^ Connect the MUT-III main harness with the blue DLC connection to the VCI.

^ Connect the blue connector of the MUT-III main harness to the vehicle's data link connector.

^ Turn the VCI power switch ON. Verify that the indicator lamp in the upper right corner of the screen is green.
