A/C, Cooling System - Poor A/C Cooling/Engine Runs Hot

No.: TSB-08-14-001

DATE: August, 2008

MODEL:
2009 Eclipse/Eclipes Spyder (See Below)

SUBJECT:
RADIATOR COOLING FAN INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT

PURPOSE

Customers of affected vehicles may complain of poor air conditioning performance and/or higher than normal engine operating temperatures. The fan located on the right (passenger's) side of the radiator shroud turns in the wrong direction, due to the installation of an incorrect cooling fan motor.

This Technical Service Bulletin advises dealers to inspect all affected vehicles for an incorrect cooling fan motor and replace those identified as incorrect.

AFFECTED VEHICLE(S)
2009 Eclipse/Eclipse Spyder equipped with 4G69, 4 cylinder engine within VIN Range 9E010662 through 9E022494.

Vehicles outside of this VIN range and vehicles equipped with V6 engines ARE NOT affected.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

Inspection

1. Open the hood and locate the radiator cooling fan mounted to the right (passenger's) side of the radiator shroud.

2. Inspect the wire colors where they enter the fan motor (see photo).

^ If the motor is wired with a RED wire and a WHITE wire, the vehicle is equipped with the CORRECT fan motor. No repairs are necessary. Submit a warranty claim for TSB Cooling Fan Motor Inspection only.

^ If the motor is wired with a BLUE wire and a BLACK wire, the vehicle is equipped with the INCORRECT fan motor. Continue with Replacement.

Replacement

Replace the radiator cooling fan motor with the part listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.

1. Remove the radiator cap. Using a clean container, drain enough coolant to prevent spillage when removing the upper radiator hose from the radiator. This coolant will be re-used to fill the system after repairs are complete.

NOTE:
Do not fully open the drain valve. You are only draining a small amount of coolant and it is easier to control the flow and minimize spillage.

2. Remove the two plastic retaining clips at the opening of the air cleaner intake duct. Rotate the duct out of the way.

3. Remove the 3 bolts from the driver's side front end structure bar (core support) and one fascia bolt.

NOTE:
You will have to remove one bolt that secures the front fascia to access the single bolt ( * ) at the front of the support.

4. Remove upper radiator hose at the radiator side only and set it aside.

5. Remove the radiator condenser (overflow) hose from the radiator and set it aside.

6. Disconnect the electrical connectors from both cooling fans.

7. Remove the cooling fan shroud retaining bolts and remove the shroud and fan assembly from the vehicle.

NOTE:
When removing the shroud assembly, take care to not damage the O2 sensor or radiator.

8. Remove the fan blade from the right (passenger's) side cooling motor and retain for re-use.

9. Replace the cooling fan motor.

10. Reassemble in reverse order.

NOTE:
When reinstalling the shroud assembly, take care to not damage the O2 sensor or radiator.

Refill Coolant

1. Refill the radiator with coolant saved in step 1, above and reinstall the radiator cap.

NOTE:
If there is coolant left in your container, do not dispose of it. Use it to top up the radiator condenser tank during step 5.

2. Start the engine and let it warm up to normal operating temperature.

3. Rev the engine up to 3,000 rpm/min several times, then stop the engine and allow it to cool down.

4. Remove the radiator cap after the engine has cooled. Add coolant to the brim. Reinstall the cap.

5. Add remaining coolant to the radiator condenser tank assembly until the level registers between the "F" and "L" mark.

CAUTION:
Do not overfill the radiator condenser tank assembly.
