* Vehicles equipped with a sunroof have a steel roof panel.

^ Trunk mounted battery and washer reservoir.

^ Daytime running lights are an integral part of the headlamp assembly.

General Information

NOTE:
The Lancer Evolution X is a completely new vehicle for MMNA with some very advanced Systems. It is important that the launch of this vehicle be monitored closely as many of these features may appear on subsequent models. For the immediate future please supply as much feedback as possible when a vehicle comes in with a complaint especially those related to the new systems. Go to the Techline Online System create a case and contact Techline PRIOR to beginning diagnosis. A Tech Talk article will be published when our need for early life complaint information is not as urgent.

^ CAN-BUS Audio and Satellite codes may set if the vehicle is driven more than 50 miles (80 Km) with the IOD fuse disconnected. The IOD should be installed at PDI.

^ DTC P1773 may falsely set if the vehicle is driven over 35MPH (56 Kph) with the MUT-III connected. Be sure to clear the code before returning the vehicle to the customer.

^ Neutral Gear Rattle (MR only) - After initial break-in some neutral gear rattle noise may be heard coming from the transmission. This is a normal characteristic of this transmission and no repair attempt should be made.

^ Delayed Engine Shutdown - Vehicles equipped with the new TC-SST will continue to run for approximately 2 seconds after the key is turned to the off position. This allows the transmission to disengage gear preselection.

^ IMPORTANT:
Refer to instructions in the Special Warranty Procedures section located at the end of this TSB for information on what to do p
ENGINE

^ The all new turbocharged and inter-cooled engine is based on the 4B1 1 from the 2008 Lancer.

^ The new 4B11 engine does not use balance shafts.

^ The new cylinder head employs a direct-acting valve train to reduce internal rotating mass.

^ A timing chain replaces the belt and MIVEC variable valve timing is used on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. A second chain drives the oil pump. If replacement of either is required both must be replaced.

^ Valve chain stretch is monitored by the ECM using data from the camshaft position sensors.

^ Engine Oil - Use only Mobil One SAE 5W-30 fully synthetic engine oil or equivalent.

TRANSMISSION

Two transmissions are available.

^ A new 5-speed manual transmission is standard in the GSR (W5M6A).

^ A new 6-speed Twin-Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC SST) is standard in the MR (W6DGA). Other than for minor conditions (seals oil and filter replacement) the transmission is non-serviceable and must be replaced as a unit.

NOTE:
In the event a transmission replacement is necessary the entire assembly must be returned to MMNA for evaluation.

Select between 'Normal" and "Sport" transmission modes with the console mounted switch at the base of the shift selector. To select "Super Sport" mode hold the console shifter in the forward ("-") position for 3 seconds.

Paddle Shift

EVO X MR versions are equipped with paddle style shifters as well as a console mounted shifter. Pull on the "+" lever (right side) to upshift. Pull on the "-"lever (left side) to downshift.

Console Shift - TC SST

For this transaxle upshifting with the console mounted shifter is done by pulling the lever towards the rear. Downshifts are performed by pushing the lever forward. This is the opposite of Sportronic Transmissions in other MMNA models.

Oils/Fluids

Manual Transmission - Use DiaQueen New Multi Gear Oil GL-3 SAE 75W-80.

TC-SST - Use only DiaQueen SSTF-1 transmission oil (Part # C0002610) and it is green in color. As DiaQueen CVTF-J1 used in the F1CJA CVT transmission is also green in color it is important to not confuse them.

CAUTION
Using the incorrect fluid in this transmission can cause major internal damage. Damage caused by the use of the incorrect fluid is not a warrantable condition.

Shift Lock Release

^ In vehicles equipped with the TC SST a shift lock release button is supplied in the event the battery becomes discharged and the shift lever cannot be moved. It is white in color and located under the console at the rear of the shift lever assembly.

NOTE:
It is not necessary to press the brake pedal or turn the ignition to the ON position to activate the shift lock release.

1. Remove the top of the center console.

Open the console storage box cover and lift up on the rear of the console top cover. Once the rear is released carefully release the clips at the front corners.

2. Using a trim stick probe into the access hole indicated and slightly towards the center (X in the photo). Press the release tab by pushing it forward firmly (towards the shift lever).

If you have difficulty locating the release tab or releasing the shift lever remove the 2 phillips head screws at the rear of the shifter plate and lift it from the rear. Carefully release the clips near the center of the plate and lift it out of the way. The release tab is located in the vicinity of the X in the photo.

3. While maintaining firm pressure on the shift release tab lift the shift lever release collar under the shift knob as you would during normal shifting and pull the transmission lever firmly (but do not force it) to the desired position.

Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC)

EVO X is the first to use Mitsubishi's new S-AWC drive system. It is comprised of an Active Center Differential ABS with EBD and All Wheel Drive. New to the system is an Active Yaw Control rear differential and Active Stability Control.

The Active Yaw Control uses two different fluids. The actual differential mechanism (gear lubricant) uses Mitsubishi Limited Slip Differential (LSD) Oil or equivalent. The torque control functions use Diamond ATF SPIII. Both are filled and drained using plugs in the differential case. Make sure you are removing the correct plug when servicing.

If the system is drained for repair the bleeding procedure must be followed closely. Bleeding screws are provided near the fluid lines. Refer to the Service Manual for specific details.

OTHER FEATURES

Cruise Control

All EVO X's are equipped with Cruise Control. However cruise control on vehicles equipped with the TC-SST will not work in the Sport or Super Sport Mode. The driver must select the normal mode in order to use this feature.

Aluminum Panels

Aluminum roof panels are used in vehicles that are not equipped with a factory installed sunroof. DO NOT attempt to add an aftermarket sunroof to these vehicles as structural problems can be created if the panel is cut. Vehicles with a factory sunroof have a steel roof panel.

The hood and front fenders are also made of aluminum to lighten the vehicle and lower the center of gravity.

Battery

To improve weight distribution and create additional room under the hood the EVO X's battery is located in a compartment in the trunk. This also allows the intake manifold to be straightened for better engine performance. Locating the battery away from the heat of the engine compartment also extends battery life.

The sealed Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) battery has special valving to vent gasses from the compartment through a vent hose. DO NOT replace the VRLA battery with a standard type battery. The correct replacement is available through the Mitsubishi Interstate battery program.

Should the battery become discharged and need an emergency jump a jump starting terminal is provided in the engine compartment for convenience. Lift the red cover to gain access to the terminal.

To gain access to the windshield washer reservoir and battery remove the appropriate panel in the trunk compartment.

Wiper/Washer

The windscreen washer reservoir is located in the trunk compartment to create more room under the hood. Remove the cover to gain access to the reservoir.

Air Conditioning

All EVO Xs are equipped with automatic climate control and come standard with Micron air filtration to filter cabin air.

"After-Run" Fan Motor

The EVO X is equipped with fans that run after the ignition switch is turned off. Under certain conditions the radiator and condenser fans will run for approximately 3 minutes to reduce underhood temperatures.
