REPLACEMENT
PURPOSE
This bulletin provides important information regarding the replacement of the Keyless Operation System (KOS) electronic control unit (ECU). It includes basic replacement information and instructions for programming the VIN and the KOS transmitters. Use the following Procedure when replacing a KOS ECU.
AFFECTED VEHICLES

REQUIRED OPERATIONS
OVERVIEW
This procedure covers the following operations:
1. Register the steering lock unit to the new KOS ECU.
2. Complete "VIN Writing" on the new KOS ECU.
3. Register all immobilizer transmitters (most vehicles have at least two).
4. Register all the keyless operation transmitters (key fobs). This step will register both the keyless entry/exit system and the RKE.
5. Register the TPMS transmitters.
6. Erase all DTCs created while replacing and registering components.
The following equipment is needed to reprogram the KOS ECU
^ VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface) - MB991824

^ USB 2.0 Cable - MB991827
^ MEDIC Version 3.1 (MUT III version 14) or higher. version 14) or higher.
WARNING
BATTERY VOLTAGE (AS MEASURED AT THE BATTERY POSTS WITHOUT ELECTRICAL LOAD) MUST BE KEPT AT 12.4V OR HIGHER DURING REPROGRAMMING. MEASURE THE BATTERY VOLTAGE AND CHARGE AS NECESSARY. DURING REPROGRAMMING, A BATTERY CHARGER SHOULD BE CONNECTED TO THE VEHICLE'S BATTERY DURING THE REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE. DO NOT ALLOW THE BATTERY CHARGER TO TIME OUT.
PROCEDURE
MUT-III and Key Preparation
1. Prepare the keys for programming using the following methods:
Remove the plastic ignition switch cover.
Lancer - Remove the emergency key from the fob and reassemble it into the slot of the key fob backwards (see photo). The key does not lock to the fob, so care must be taken to keep them together. The emergency key does not contain the immobilizer transmitter and must be in direct contact with the fob.
Outlander - Remove the emergency key and insert it into the ignition. Turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine).
If you are unable to register the original emergency keys to a new KOS ECU, you must order one (1) new emergency key (6370A362). Program the new key first, then reprogram the original keys.
