Brakes - Brembo(R) Caliper Paint Peeling Prevention

No: TSB-10-35-003

DATE: November, 2010

MODEL: 2003-on Lancer Evolution

SUBJECT:
BREMBO BRAKE CALIPER PAINT PEELING

This TSB supercedes TSB04-35-005, issued December, 2004 to add model years and provide additional details. This is a complete rewrite and individual changes are not indicated.

PURPOSE

To prevent peeling of the special coating on Brembo brake calipers after the brakes have been bled, use the following procedure as described in the service manual, to completely clean brake fluid from the caliper surface and from inside the bleeder screw.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
2003 - on Lancer Evolution

DETAILS

CAUTION
Wear safety glasses and protective gloves when using air pressure to remove brake fluid from the bleeder valve.

Take care to avoid damaging the brake calipers with tools or brake fluid. Brake fluid can cause peeling of the special brake caliper coating.

When bleeding, always use a hose connected to the bleeder screw to direct water into a proper container.

After brake bleeding, cover the bleeder screw and surrounding area with a cloth or similar material. Then blow air into the top of he bleeder screw to remove any remaining brake fluid. Air pressure should be regulated to a low setting to minimize splatter.

Other materials that may cause damage include, but are not limited to:

Wheel Cleaners: Many commercial alloy wheel cleaners may damage the brake caliper finish. Wheel cleaners meant for uncoated wheels should not be used on vehicles with coated Brembo brake calipers. When wheel cleaners are used, they should only be those meant for coated wheels and should be thoroughly flushed with water. Refer to TSB-09-31-005 for additional information about wheel cleaners.

Parts Cleaners: Non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner can be used to clean grease and dirt from the caliper, but should be used sparingly when cleaning calipers where rubber parts may be exposed to these chemicals.

CAUTION
Excessive cleaning with brake cleaners can lead to deterioration of rubber parts.
