Body - Side Air Dam Gap At Rear Wheel Opening

No.: TSB-08-66-001

DATE: August, 2008

MODEL:
2008 - on Lancer Evolution

SUBJECT:
ACCESSORY SIDE AIR DAM GAP AT REAR WHEEL OPENING

PURPOSE

On some affected vehicles, the accessory side air dam displays an abnormal gap at the rear wheel opening. This condition can be evident on either or both sides of the vehicle. The condition may be due to poor adhesion between the inner mounting bracket and the side air dam material.

This Technical Service Bulletin provides a repair procedure to correct the condition.

NOTE:
Inspect both sides of the vehicle. If both sides show the condition, both should be repaired. The repair kit contains adhesive tape for both sides of the vehicle and an adhesive promoter packet to be used on both sides as required.

AFFECTED VEHICLE(S)
2008-on Lancer Evolution

REPAIR PROCEDURE

This is a Photos Required Condition repair. See the Warranty Information in this TSB for details.

Required Tools and Materials

1. Remove the affected side air dam from the vehicle. If the parts from both sides of the vehicle are affected, remove and prepare both sides BEFORE opening the adhesive promoter packet.

^ Carefully lift the splash shield in the front wheel house and remove the bolt (M6 x 6) retaining the front of the air dam.

^ Using a nylon trim tool, carefully release the clip at the rear of the air dam.

^ Remove 10 self-tapping screws from the underside of the air dam.

^ Pull the air dam straight from the body and release additional retaining clips.

2. To prevent damage to the painted surface, place the side air dam face down on a protected surface.

3. Determine if the adhesive tape for the bracket has separated from the air dam material.

4. Carefully pull the bracket up to separate it from the air dam material.

!!!CAUTION!!!!
Do not completely remove the bracket as it is also held in place by a rivet.

5. After separation has been completed, carefully rotate the inner bracket around the center of the rivet as shown. Scrape/Peel off as much of the adhesive as possible by hand or with a flat nylon tool from both the inner bracket and the side air dam.

!! CAUTION !!
Take care not to cause damage to the bracket when rotating it.

6. Use 3M All Purpose Adhesive Cleaner to help completely remove any adhesive remnants on the inner bracket and side air dam.

All traces of the original tape and adhesive must be removed for a successful repair.

NOTE:
If the parts from both sides of the vehicle are affected, remove and prepare both sides BEFORE opening the adhesive promoter packet.

7. After complete removal of adhesive, prep the affected surfaces by cleaning with isopropyl alcohol (inner bracket and side air dam).

8. Apply 3M Adhesive Promoter (#06396) onto the side air dam affected area as shown (indicated with red border).

NOTE:
The liquid contents of the adhesive promoter (06396) packet should be completely used as soon as possible after opening. Apply promoter only to the areas that will be fully covered with tape. For best results, apply tape immediately after promoter application, and no more than one hour after promoter application. Be sure these surfaces remain free from contaminants prior to tape application.

9. Apply adhesive promoter onto the surface of the inner bracket where the adhesive tape will be applied as shown.

10. Remove the adhesive tape from the backing paper and apply it to the inner bracket as shown.

11. Peel the back liner from the adhesive tape as shown.

12. Rotate the inner bracket back to its original position and press firmly to promote good adhesion. Check the inner bracket to assure that the bracket is properly adhered.

13. Reinstall the side air dam to the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of removal. Refer to the installation instructions available on the Mitsubishi Dealer Link (MDL) for additional information.
