M/T - Buzz/Rattle From Dash/Steering Column Areas
No: TSB-08-21-002DATE: April, 2008
MODEL: See Below
SUBJECT:
BUZZ OR RATTLE TYPE NOISE
This TSB supercedes TSB-07-21-001, issued April, 2007, to add additional model years to the Affected Vehicles. Revised information is indicated by <.
PURPOSE
Due to a vibration through the clutch hydraulic system, some vehicles may exhibit a slight buzzing or rattling type noise that seems to come from the steering column or instrument cluster area, or possibly the clutch pedal area. The noise typically occurs at 2500-3500 RPM between 50 to 75 mph. If a customer has a vehicle with the above condition, install a clutch damper kit as described in this bulletin.
AFFECTED VEHICLES <
2006 & later Eclipse 2.4L M/T
2007 & later Eclipse Spyder 2.4L M/T
PROCEDURE
1. Record the radio presets and and disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the Powertrain Control Module mounting bolts to allow for removal of the air cleaner box in Step 3.
3. Disconnect the airflow sensor and remove the air intake duct, air cleaner box and intake tube.
4. Remove the main harness attaching clamp.
5. Remove the clutch hardline at the transmission and hose end.
6. Install the clutch damper with the two bolts supplied in the kit. For easier line installation, hand tighten the bolts.
7. Install the new clutch hardline from the damper to the hose connection end. Fully tighten the fitting at the hose end. Tighten the fitting at the damper HAND TIGHT ONLY. See photo in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin for hardline identification.
8. Install the new clutch hardline from the slave cylinder to the damper. TIGHTEN BOTH ENDS HAND TIGHT ONLY. See photo in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin for hardline identification.
9. Torque the damper installation bolts (from Step 6) to 15-20 Nm.
10. Install the clip to separate the two new clutch lines and hold them in place.
11. Refill the clutch master cylinder with DOT 3 brake fluid and bleed the system with a helper.
One person depresses the clutch pedal SLOWLY, one stroke at a time, while the helper loosens each hydraulic circuit fitting one at a time (starting at the damper and finishing at the slave cylinder) to bleed air at each connection. Remember to periodically check the fluid level in the reservoir and refill as necessary. When each point is bled, retighten that connection.
Caution
When bleeding the hydraulic circuit connections, protect areas adjacent to the connections to prevent brake fluid contaminating the surface. Remember to completely clean up any residual brake fluid.
12. Support the clutch hose connection bracket and torque the line at that location to 13-16 Nm. Then torque all remaining line fittings to 13-16 Nm.
13. Reinstall the air intake duct, air cleaner box and intake tube. Then reconnect the air flow sensor.
14. Reinstall the main harness attaching bolts and clamps.
15. Reconnect the negative battery cable and reset the radio presets and clock.
16. Road test the vehicle to confirm the noise has been eliminated.
