Tie Rod: Testing and Inspection
*This document added per manufacturer TSB #08-37-006TIE ROD FREE PLAY CHECK
NOTE: Measure free play of left and right wheel separately.
1. Jack up one wheel of the vehicle.
2. Confirm the range of free play on the wheel under the condition that the steering wheel does not rotate.
3. Set the dial guage on the wheel rim at a position horizontally across the center line of the wheel, as shown in the figure.
4. Methods to measure free play with a dial guage. Push alternately at positions A and B of the wheel rim (forward side and rear side), at a position horizontally across the center line of the wheel, using a push--pull gauge with a force of 100N (22lb), and read the dial gauge as shown in the figure.
5. Using a spring gauge (special tool J-44372) attached to the wheel spoke with string, pull alternately at position C and D of the wheel rim at points horizontally across the center of the wheel, with a force of 100N (22lb). Read the dial gauge.
6. If the total movement of the wheel is greater than 0.6mm (0.024"), investigate the cause of the free play between the tie rod end and the steering gearbox. Replace parts if necessary.
7. If the total movement is 0.6mm (0.024") or less, the area of concern is not between the tie rod end and the steering gearbox (do not replace the tie rod or steering gearbox). Investigate other areas for the source of the free play.
