Engine Controls - PCM Update for False DTC P0231

No: TSB-06-13-008
DATE: April, 2006
MODEL: 2006 Lancer Evolution

SUBJECT:
MISDIRECTED DTC P0231

PURPOSE

Due to PCM programming, Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0231 may erroneously display on the scan tool. Vehicle conditions which caused this DTC to set should have set DTC P0090 "Fuel Pressure Solenoid Circuit" instead. Do not attempt any fuel pump diagnosis or repairs due to a DTC P0231 reading.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

2006 Lancer Evolution models produced before 10/24/05

PROCEDURE

1. Perform service manual diagnosis procedures for DTC P0090 ("Fuel Pressure Solenoid Circuit").

2. Check the underside of the hood to verify that there is no label previously installed to indicate that this TSB reprogramming has already been done.

3. Using the MUT-III, verify the PCM Software p/n (ROM ID):

^ If the ROM ID is 885915 or higher, do not continue with this bulletin procedure.

^ If the ROM ID is lower than 885915, continue with Step 4.

4. Use the MUT-III to erase all DTCs set in the PCM.

5. Verify that your MUT-III is at STV Version 13.1 or higher, and that it has the most current version of the reprogramming database:

a. Select "Special Function", then select "ECU Reprogramming."

b. Select "Database File Display". The database version is displayed in the top right corner of the screen. Make sure the database version is N06031 or greater.

c. If the database version is N06031 or greater, continue with Step 6.

d. If the database version is less than N06031, you must transfer the new reprogramming data from Reflash Update CD 4/06 to the MUT-III hard drive as follows:

(1) Install Reflash Update CD 4106 into the PC's DVD-ROM drive.

(2) Follow the instructions on the screen. The system will automatically transfer the reprogramming data onto the PC's hard drive.

(3) Transfer the reprogramming data from the MUT-III laptop to the memory card. (Use the port on the left side of the MUT-III laptop.)

Select ECU Reprogramming, then Memory Card Transfer. A status bar will display while the data is loading into the memory card.

When the memory card data transfer is complete, remove the memory card from the laptop and install it in the VCI.

CAUTION
BATTERY VOLTAGE (AS MEASURED AT THE BATTERY POSTS WITHOUT ELECTRICAL LOAD) MUST BE 12.4V OR HIGHER IN ORDER TO REPROGRAM THE PCM.

6. Connect the following reprogramming equipment in the same manner as for normal vehicle diagnosis:

^ MUT-III PC

^ VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface) - MB991824

^ MUT-III main harness B (red) - MB991911

^ USB 2.0 cable - MB991827

^ Connect the VCI to the vehicle.

^ connect the MUT-III laptop.

^ IMPORTANT!
Models equipped with ABS: With the ignition key OFF, unplug the ABS fuse (7.5 amp # 12 fuse in the junction box compartment).

^ Reprogram the PCM, using "Automatic reprogramming" on the VCI. It will take up to 20 minutes to complete the reprogramming.

CAUTION
DO NOT DISTURB THE HARNESS CABLES OR CONNECTIONS. INTERRUPTION DURING THE PROGRAMMING PROCESS COULD CAUSE THE PCM TO LOSE DATA OR PREVENT FUTURE PCM REPROGRAMMING.

If the message "ECU at Current Level of VCI" displays:

^ the PCM may have already been reprogrammed for this concern, or

^ your MUT-III may have the incorrect database update. Verify that database N06031 was transferred to the memory card, and that the memory card is properly installed in the VCI.

7. After reprogramming, the new ECU part number and software part number (ROM ID) will display. Verify that they are the same as those listed below. Note this information.

8. Turn the ignition switch to OFF. Disconnect the VCI from the vehicle. Wait at least 10 seconds, then start the engine to verify proper operation.

9. Using a ball-point pen, enter the appropriate PCM part number, vendor number, ROM ID, this TSB number (TSB-06-13-008), your dealer code, and the current date on the Engine

^ Compartment and Control Module Label (part no. MSSF-024G-00).

10. Carefully remove all dirt and oil from a vacant area near the VECI label on the underside of the hood, and affix the Engine Compartment label.

11. Affix the Control Module Label to the PCM.

12. IMPORTANT: On models equipped with ABS, reconnect the ABS fuse. Confirm no DTC is set.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

IMPORTANT:
You must enter the PCM software number (ROM ID) in the "Spec Value" field of the related warranty claim. Claims submitted without the PCM software number (ROM ID) entered on the claim are subject to chargeback.
