Fuel System - DTC P0181 Update
SOURCE: Mitsubishi Tech Talk Article April/May 2005TITLE: DTC P0181 Update
APPLIES TO: 2003-05 Outlander, 2002-05 Lancer
SERVICE TIP:
DTC P0181 may set be due to incorrect resistance in the fuel level sending unit thermistor circuit. If possible, park the vehicle in the shop overnight so the temperature of the fuel in the tank is the same as the ambient temperature in the shop.
Lancer: Disconnect 3-pin connector D-10 under the rear seat and check for 5.0 V on the P wire at pin 3 and ground on the B wire at pin 2. Repair harness if voltage is not 5V. Reconnect the connector and measure voltage on the P wire. Replace the sending unit (p/n MR557168) if outside of these specs:
0 C (32 F) = 2.7 - 3.1 V
20 C (68 F) = 2.1 - 2.5 V
40 C (104F) = 1.6 - 2.0V
Outlander: Access the fuel temp sensor in the data list using the MUT-III. It should be within 5-10 degrees F of an accurate thermometer placed in the car. If the data list temp is incorrect, inspect the harness at connector D-14 under the rear seat for 5.0 V on the GR-G wire and a ground at the B wire on pin 2. Repair the harness if voltage is not 5V. If voltage is 5V at the harness, replace the sending unit (p/n MR978016 2WD; MR978024 AWD).
