Campaign - Front Wheel Bearing Inspection/Replacement

No.: SC-04-004
DATE: July, 2004
MODEL: See Below

SUBJECT:
WHEEL BEARING INSPECTION FRONT
SERVICE CAMPAIGN BULLETIN

PURPOSE

This service campaign bulletin contains information concerning a product upgrade relating to the front wheel bearing support assemblies.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Condition

Some vehicles in the affected production date range may have front wheel bearing supports which were machined slightly out of specification for proper alignment to the knuckle. As a product improvement upgrade to ensure long-term durability, dealers should inspect all affected vehicles as described in this bulletin. Replace any front wheel bearing support unit that is out of specification, using the new, improved parts listed in this bulletin.

Customer Notification

A letter will be sent to all registered owners, asking them to return their vehicle to their Mitsubishi dealer for inspection and possible repair.

Dealer Action Summary

Check the VIN number of each affected vehicle to verify that this service campaign applies. For all affected vehicles, both unsold dealership inventory and sold customer vehicles, inspect the front wheel bearing support units as instructed in this bulletin. If a bearing unit is out of specification, install the hub/bearing/rotor assembly kit listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin. The hub/bearing/rotor is assembled together as a matched set to minimize runout.

Contact any purchasers of recently sold vehicles and ask them bring their vehicle in for inspection. Recent vehicle sales may not have been registered in time for the customer to receive the notification letter.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This campaign affects the following vehicles:

^ 2004 Eclipse built between 1/2/04 and 2/18/04

^ 2004 Eclipse Spyder built between 1/2/04 and 2/18/04

^ 2004 Galant models equipped with 2.4L MIVEC engine built between 12/16/03 and 2/18/04

Before starting this campaign procedure, CHECK ON THE WARRANTY SUPER SCREEN to verify that the vehicle is an affected VIN for this campaign and that this campaign procedure has not already been completed.

PROCEDURE

Perform this procedure on both left and right front wheel bearings:

1. Remove the front wheel and brake caliper.

2. For proper reassembly, mark the location of a bearing hub stud and its corresponding hole in the rotor.

3. Remove the driveshaft nut.

4. Remove the brake rotor.

5. Make a paint mark on the flange nut side of the bracket as shown. Use this mark during reassembly, to install the bolts from the correct direction.

6. Remove the two nuts and bolts securing the knuckle upper end to the strut.

CAUTION
Use care to prevent damage to the ABS wheel speed sensor cable.

7. Pull out the driveshaft from the wheel bearing hub shaft.

8. Loosen the four knuckle mounting bolts 1/2 turn.

Then, while making sure the bearing is seated against the knuckle, tighten only one of the mounting bolts to 88 Nm (65 ft/lbs).

9. Use a 0.20 mm feeler gauge to check the clearance between the knuckle mounting surface and the flange face on the bearing, at all four bolted corners:

a. If a 0.20 mm feeler gauge cannot be easily slipped between the knuckle and the bearing flange at any of the four corners, the bearing does NOT require replacement. Go to Step 10.

b. If a 0.20 mm feeler gauge can be easily slipped between the knuckle and the bearing flange at any of the four corners, the bearing unit must be replaced. Install the new hub/bearing/rotor assembly listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.

IMPORTANT:
A vehicle may have a good bearing on one side and a bad bearing on the other side.
Be sure to inspect both sides as described in Step 9. Replace a bearing if it fails the inspection.

10. Tighten all bearing mounting bolts to 88 +/- 10 Nm (65 +/- ft/lbs).

11. Reassemble the knuckle, using the paint mark made in Step 5 for proper orientation of the bolts. Tighten the nut side of the knuckle assembly to 300 +/- 24 Nm (221+/- 18 ft/lbs).

12. Ensure the face of the hub and inside hub area of the rotor are clean. Remove any dirt or rust.

13. Reinstall the rotor, aligning the marked rotor hole with the marked stud. Tighten the axle nuts to 226 +/- 29 Nm (167 +/- 21 ft/lbs).

14. Reinstall the driveshaft nut, using a new cotter pin. Refer to the appropriate service manual for brake and wheel reassembly procedures and torque specifications.

15. If a new hub/beanng/rotor assembly has been installed, inspect the brake pad for excessive wear condition. If the pad thickness is less than 2 mm (0.08 in.), replace both front brake pads.

PARTS INFORMATION

Use the genuine Mitsubishi Parts listed.
