Recall - VECI Label Replacement

No: SC-03-002
DATE: October, 2003
MODEL: 2004 Eclipse & Spyder

SUBJECT:
VEHICLE EMISSION CONTROL INFORMATION
(VECI) LABEL SERVICE CAMPAIGN

PURPOSE

The Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) label on a limited number of 2004 Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder 50-state emission certified vehicles is incorrect and must be changed. On the original label, both the EPA and California sections state that the vehicle is certified "Interim Non-Tier2, Bin 9". The California section should state "LEV I LEV." These vehicles are correctly built and meet all of the appropriate emissions standards.

A letter, with the label enclosed, is being sent to all owners of the affected vehicles, instructing them to install the new VECI label themselves. A copy of the customer notification letter is included with this bulletin. Vehicle owners who do not wish to install the label are advised to ask their Mitsubishi Motors dealer to install the label at no charge.

Dealers with unsold affected vehicles in inventory must install a new label on each of these vehicles. Dealers who have affected vehicles in inventory will receive with this bulletin a list of these vehicles and a supply of labels for these unsold vehicles. If any vehicle on this list has been sold, the dealer should contact the purchaser of that vehicle to arrange for installation of the new VECI label.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

2004 Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder with 50-state emissions built before 9/12/03

LABEL INSTALLATION

1. Open the hood, locate the VECI label, and inspect the part number on the label.

a. If the VECI label part number is MN180153, MN180154, or MN180155, continue with Step 2 to install the new label.

b. If the VECI label part number is 7430A064, 7430A065, or 7430A066, do not continue with this campaion procedure. The label is correct and does not require replacement.

2. Clean the old label thoroughly of all dirt and residue.

3. Carefully peel off the backing strip from the new VECI label. Apply the new label overthe original label.
