HIGH ENGINE IDLE AFTER PCM REPROGRAMMING - EMISSIONS
RECALL CAMPAIGN
PURPOSE
Affected vehicles that have had the PCM reprogrammed for Emissions Bulletin EMR-05-001 may experience higher than normal engine idle. On these vehicles, the throttle position sensor learn value must be re-set (reinitialized) as described in this bulletin.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
2002 Lancer models equipped with 2.0L engine, which had the PCM reprogrammed as described in EMR-05-001
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
A letter will be sent to all owners of affected vehicles, telling them to bring their vehicle to a Mitsubishi Motors dealer to have the throttle position sensor reinitialized. A copy of the customer notification letter (for both Federal and California emissions) is shown in this bulletin.
REQUIRED OPERATIONS
Before starting this campaign procedure, CHECK ON THE WARRANTY SUPERSCREEN to verify that the vehicle is an affected VIN for this campaign and that this campaign procedure has not already been completed.
1. Verify that there is an underhood label indicating that PCM reprogramming for Emissions Recall EMR-05-001 has already been done.
2. Note the customer's audio system settings.
3. Disconnect the battery for one minute.
4. Reconnect the battery. The TPS is now reinitialized.
5. Start the engine and allow to idle until it reaches normal operating temperature. During this time, reset the customer's audio system settings.
6. Shift the transmission to Neutral or Park.
7. Turn the A/C on and off and check the engine idle speed.
^ If the idle is normal, or if it is higher or lower than normal, continue with Step 8.
^ If the idle is lower than normal and hunting, contact Tech Line. Do not continue this procedure.
8. Idle for one minute or longer with the A/C on.
9. Turn the A/C off. Leave the transmission in Neutral or Park.
10. Idle for one minute or longer with the A/C off.
11. Verify that the idle is normal. If idle continues to be higher than normal, contact Tech Line.
12. FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN CALIFORNIA ONLY: Complete a "VEHICLE EMISSION RECALL - PROOF OF CORRECTION" form (p/n MSSF-106D-00). Give the completed form to the vehicle owner.
