SUBJECT:
RKE HORN ANSWERBACK CONFIRMATION
SOFTWARE PROGRAM ERROR
PURPOSE
This bulletin provides modified instructions (by VIN range) for customizing the RKE horn answerback function.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Incorrect software was programmed into the RKE system for the affected vehicles. The procedure for customizing the RKE horn/chirp answerback confirmation (turning the horn chirp ON or OFF) when locking the doors with the RKE transmitter is slightly different than instructed in the owner's manual, service manual, and the tag attached to the RKE transmitters. If a customer complains that they cannot turn the answerback horn/chirp ON or OFF Using the printed instructions, check the VIN range and provide these new instructions for their use.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
2002 Eclipse, Eclipse Spyder, & Galant built between November 9, 2001 and January 11, 2002 (between VINs: -----2E075000 through -----2E102011)
PROCEDURE
NOTE:
Perform these procedures with the ignition key removed from the ignition switch. Sit in the driver's seat so you can clearly hear the chime/tone which originates from the ETA CS (in the instrument panel area) when the horn/answerback mode reprogramming is successful.
1. Press and hold the LOCK button on the RKE transmitter for 4 to 10 seconds, then press the transmitter's UNLOCK button during this time period. After the UNLOCK button is pressed, make sure to hold both buttons down for at least 4 seconds before proceeding with step 2.
2. Release the LOCK button first, then release the UNLOCK button.
3. A chime/tone will sound to indicate the current horn/answerback mode (1 = ON, 2 = OFF, 3 = Horn sounds ONLY when pressing the LOCK button again after the doors are already locked). Repeat this procedure until the desired horn/answerback mode is set.
NOTE:
Only Step 2 is different from the standard procedures shown in the owner's manuals and service manuals. The standard procedure is to release the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons at the same time.
