FUEL TANK LEAKAGE - SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN

PURPOSE
The fuel tanks on certain 2001 Galant, Eclipse, and Eclipse Spyder vehicles have a safety defect which could lead to fuel leakage. A bulge created during the tank manufacturing process may have resulted in a thinning of the tank material during a welding operation.

Dealers must inspect the fuel tank cavity number on these vehicles as instructed in this bulletin to determine whether the fuel tank has this defect. The fuel tank must be replaced if the fuel tank cavity number is 1. Refer to the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
Certain Galant, Eclipse, and Eclipse Spyder models.

For your convenience, a complete list of the affected vehicles for this recall campaign is shown in this bulletin.

IMPORTANT
Affected inventory vehicles must be inspected/repaired before the vehicle is sold. Dealers must check their inventory vehicles' VINs on the Warranty Super Screen to verify whether the vehicle is an affected VIN for this recall campaign.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by telephone, advising them to bring their vehicle to their Mitsubishi Motors dealer to have the fuel tank inspected.

REQUIRED OPERATIONS
CHECK ON THE WARRANTY SUPERSCREEN to verify that the vehicle is an affected VIN for this campaign and that this campaign procedure has not already been completed.

1. Raise the vehicle.





2. Inspect the fuel tank cavity number located at the bottom rear of area of the fuel tank on the ORVR cover plate.

3. If the fuel tank cavity number is 1 (CAV1), replace the fuel tank. Submit a warranty claim for inspection and replacement of the fuel tank.

4. If the fuel tank cavity number is 2 (CAV2), do not replace the fuel tank. Submit a warranty claim for inspection only.
