Convertible Top - Headliner/Rear Glass Separation

No.: TSB-01-42A-004
DATE: April, 2001
MODEL: 2001 Eclipse Spyder

SUBJECT:
CONVERTIBLE TOP HEADLINER COMES LOOSE FROM REAR GLASS

PURPOSE

This bulletin contains information for correcting a condition where the convertible top headliner attaching hook and loop fastener comes loose from the rear glass.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The headliner may fall away from the rear glass. This may be caused by the hook and loop fastener losing its adhesion and coming completely or almost completely loose from the rear glass. To repair this condition use the following procedures to clean the glass and remount the hook & loop fastener to the glass using the specified Permatex(R) Ultra-Bond Super Glue Gel.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

2001 Eclipse Spyder convertible

PROCEDURE

1. Detach the headliner hook and loop from the original hook and loop fastener that is to be reattached to the rear glass.

2. The hook and loop fastener will usually be completely detached from the glass. If it is still attached in a small area, carefully remove it. Thoroughly clean the area on the rear glass where the hook & loop fastener strip is to be reattached. For best results, use silicon-free Mitsubishi Glass Cleaner (P/N A999ZC1X06).

!CAUTION
DO NOT use another glass cleaner if it contains silicon. Silicon glass cleaners will prevent the glue and adhesive from setting properly. Use isopropyl alcohol if a silicon-free glass cleaner is not available.

3. Place a drop cloth or plastic over the back of the rear seat to prevent damage from glue spillage.

4. Use the original fastener that came loose from the glass. On the back (adhesive) side of the original fastener, run a small bead (about 1/4 inch wide) of Permatex(R) Ultra-Bond Super Glue Gel along its entire length.

NOTE:
The tubes of glue gel are small. You may need 2 or more tubes to attach the whole fastener.

5. Carefully press the fastener strip onto the rear glass using the upper contour of the glass as a guide. Make sure the fastener will be positioned so the headliner does not interfere with the viewing area of the glass. Make sure the fastener is positioned evenly on each side of the rear glass. The fastener should be positioned so the headliner overlaps the edge of the glass by approximately 21 mm.

NOTE:
To promote adhesion, this procedure should be done in a location where the ambient temperature is more than 70°F If the ambient temperature is lower than 70°F apply low heat to the glass and mist with water.

6. Hold the fastener strip against the glass for at least 2 minutes so the glue will begin to set. Be careful so glue does not get on the viewable area of the glass or on your hands. Using a piece of cardboard to press against the fastener will reduce the chance of getting glue on the glass or on your hands. Make sure the fastener does not move. After the glue sets, wait 30 minutes before reattaching the headliner.
