Convertible Top - Fluttering Noise at Highway Speeds
No: TSB-01-42A-007DATE: June, 2001
MODEL: 2001 Eclipse Spyder
Subject:
EXCESSIVE TOP COVER FLUTTERING NOISE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS
PURPOSE
This bulletin contains instructions for removing topstack bow stuffers to eliminate excessive top cover fluttering noise which may occur when driving at highway speeds.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Symptom
Though some sounds from the top cover are expected and normal, wind, especially from the side, and/or driving the vehicle at high speeds may cause the top cover material to flutter excessively. This can cause a noise the makes a "sizzling" or "rain" sound.
Remedy
To reduce this condition, remove the stuffers from the No. 3, and if necessary, the No. 2 topstack frame bows.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
2001 Eclipse Spyder Convertible
PROCEDURE
1. Cycle the top to the half-open position to gain access to the top side of the No. 3 bow.
2. Remove the stuffer material from the No. 3 Bow.
3. lose and latch the top and test drive the vehicle to verify the fluttering noise is sufficiently reduced. If there is still excessive noise present, repeat step 1 and 2, but this time remove the stuffer material from the No. 2 Bow.
CAUTION
Make sure that the stuffers are removed only from the No. 3 bow and, if necessary, the No. 2 bow. DO NOT remove the stuffer from the No. 4 bow. Removing the stuffer from the No. 4 bow will increase any fluttering noise.
4. Close and latch the top and test drive the vehicle again to make sure the condition is improved. Be aware that some fluttering sounds may be heard under certain wind and/or driving conditions even after the stuffer(s) are removed.
