Recall - Crankshaft Position Sensor Harness Routing

No: SR-00-008

DATE: November, 2000

MODEL: See Below

SUBJECT:
REROUTING OF CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR HARNESS - SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN

PURPOSE
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. (MMSA) is voluntarily recalling affected vehicles for possible crankshaft position sensor harness damage. This safety recall bulletin contains instructions for rerouting the crankshaft position sensor harness to prevent damage to the harness caused by the sharp edge of the heat protector. The crankshaft position sensor wiring harness on the vehicle may contact an engine compartment heat shield. Prolonged wiring harness contact with the heat shield will cause the wiring insulation to wear and eventually to ground out. This will cause the engine to die-out and could cause an accident without warning.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This safety recall campaign should be performed on all affected vehicles built up to July 25, 2000.

Check each vehicle's VIN on the Warranty SuperScreen to verify the vehicle is included in the campaign.

This recall affects only vehicles equipped with the 2.4L, 4-cylinder (4G64) engine.
2001 Eclipse built before VIN ---1E025392
2001 Eclipse Spyder built before VIN ---1E025344
2001 Galant built before VIN ---1E025948

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

A letter will be sent to all owners of affected vehicles telling them to bring their vehicles to their Mitsubishi Motors dealer for rerouting of the crankshaft position sensor harness. A sample of the owner notification letter appears at the end of this bulletin.

SUPPLEMENTAL DEALER INFORMATION
At the beginning of this safety recall campaign launch, all affected Vehicle Identification Number (VINs) will be loaded into the MMSA Diamond Network system. Dealers may perform this campaign before the customer receives their letter if verification of vehicle involvement is made.

If the customer has not yet received a notification letter and a dealer suspects that the vehicle is involved in this safety recall campaign, check the VIN in the Diamond Network Warranty System to verify that the vehicle is actually involved. Inform the customer that their vehicle is affected by this recall campaign and request the customer's permission to perform the repair. Upon completion, inform the customer that if they receive a notification letter, the campaign has already been performed and no further action is necessary.

Dealers should check their inventory of new vehicles and perform this safety recall campaign on any new unsold unit before it is delivered to a purchaser.

IMPORTANT
Affected inventory vehicles must be inspected/repaired before the vehicle is sold. Dealers must check their inventory vehicles' VINs on the Warranty Super Screen to verify whether the vehicle is an affected VIN for this recall campaign.

PROCEDURE

CAUTION
This repair involves engine components that are hot during operation. DO NOT proceed with these procedures until engine components are cooled to ambient temperature.

1. Pull up and lift out the coolant reservoir bottle then move it to the side and out of the way. Leave the hoses connected.

2. Remove the bolt securing the crankshaft position sensor/bracket assembly.

3. As shown in the illustration, cut and remove the harness clip on the sensor bracket.

CAUTION
BE CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE THE HARNESS.

4. Inspect the harness for damage. If there is damage, repair the harness. If there is no damage, or after any harness damage is repaired, reroute the harness away from the edge of the heat protector as shown.

5. Reattach the sensor/bracket assembly to its original position and torque the bolt to 10 to 20 Nm.

CAUTION
WHEN REATTACHING AND TIGHTENING THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR BRACKET, MAKE SURE THE SENSOR HARNESS IS NOT PINCHED BETWEEN THE SENSOR BRACKET AND THE POWER STEERING PUMP/BRACKET ASSEMBLY.

6. Reinstall the engine coolant reservoir bottle.
