NO.: TSB-01-52B-002

DATE: May, 2001

MODEL: See below

SUBJECT:
SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REPLACEMENT

PURPOSE

If Diagnostic Trouble Code 72 or 82 (Side Air Bag Open Circuit) sets, the side air bag module in the driver's or front passenger's seat may require replacement. This bulletin describes side air bag module replacement procedures. If a vehicle has been in a collision in which a side air bag deployed, replace the entire seat assembly, which contains the side air bag module.

Refer to the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin for side air bag module replacement part numbers.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1999-2001 Galant models equipped with side air bags
2000-2001 Eclipse models equipped with side air bags
2001 Eclipse Spyder models equipped with side air bags

PROCEDURE

1. If DTC 72 or 82 has set, perform the DTC troubleshooting procedures in Group 52B of the appropriate service manual. If troubleshooting indicates that a side air bag module is the cause of the DTC, continue with this procedure to replace it.

2. Remove the appropriate front seat from the vehicle. Refer to Group 52A of the service manual for seat removal instructions. To disconnect the SRS harness, lift the green tab on the connector.

!WARNING
Observe the service precautions for SRS components in Group 52B of the service manual.

3. Place the seat on a clean workbench. Remove the seatback panel by inserting a screwdriver at the sides near the bottom, and pushing the clips inboard (toward the middle of the seat). This will release the clips from the panel. Remove the panel from the seat. Then reinstall the clips in the panel.

4. Locate the yellow wiring harness underneath the seat. Use pliers to remove the harness attachment clips and the red 2-pin connector from their mounting holes in the seat frame.

On Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder passenger seats only cut the harness tie wrap to remove the wiring harness from the seal frame bar.

5. Remove the seat cover attachment clips from the area around the side air bag module. Then remove the two side air bag module mounting nuts.

6. Remove the side air bag module with its harness. Note the harness routing.

7. Install the new air bag module (see PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin).

Tighten the air bag module mounting nuts to 19 - 27 Nm (14 - 20 ft/lbs). After torquing both nuts to specification, re-torque the first nut.

8. Route the harness between the cushion and the seat frame bar, as the original harness was positioned. Install the harness.

Reinstall the seat cover attachment clips. Be sure the cover material and its inner lining is smooth (not wrinkled) at the side of the seat.

9. Install the harness attachment clips and the red 2-pin connector into their mounting holes in the seat frame.

a. On Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder front passenger seats, use a new tie-wrap to secure the harness to the seat frame bar. This will prevent harness interference with the seat spring.

10. Reinstall the seatback panel.

11. Reinstall the seat as described in the service manual. Reconnect the SRS connector. If equipped with power seat, reconnect the power seat connector.

12. Use the MUT-II scan tool to erase the Side Air Bag Open Circuit DTC from the PCM memory.
