Door Glass - Creaking/Popping Noise
NO: TSB-99-42A-004DATE: February, 1999
MODEL: See Below
SUBJECT:
DOOR GLASS POPPING NOISE
PURPOSE
This bulletin has repair procedures for correcting a popping noise originating from the door window glass.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Customers may complain of a popping and/or creaking noise coming from the door window glass in the area around the A-pillar. This noise usually occurs with the window closed while driving under normal conditions. This noise may be caused by lack of grease in the front glass guide or loose glass mounting components. The noise can be eliminated by applying grease to the front glass guide and tightening the glass guide slider and window regulator attachment points.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1995-99 Eclipse
1996-99 Eclipse Spyder
PROCEDURE
NOTE:
The door glass does not require removal from the vehicle for the repairs described in this bulletin.
Refer to section 42 of the appropriate service manual when doing these repairs. TSB-96-42A-022 also contains related information about door and window rattles which may be of help.
1. Test drive the vehicle to duplicate the customer's complaint.
2. Remove the door trim panel and the speaker and speaker housing to access the window regulator and slide mechanism.
^ If the vehicle has power windows, remove the switch from the door panel and reconnect it to the door harness so you can lower and/or raise the window if necessary during the repair procedures.
^ If the vehicle has manual windows reinstall the window crank onto the shaft to raise and/or lower the window.
3. Remove the front glass guide. Match-mark the three securing nuts/bolts before removal so the guide can be reinstalled in the correct position.
After nut removal, remove the guide through the speaker hole.
4. Remove the glass guide slider. The slider is attached to the front of the window with a nut and can be accessed through the speaker hole.
5. Accessing through the speaker hole, tighten the inner nut on the glass slider mount stud on the front of the window. This step is very important.
NOTE:
The picture was taken with the window out of the vehicle, however, you do not have to remove the window to do this procedure.
6. With the slider and guide now out of the vehicle, insert the slider onto the guide and check to see if there is any looseness or play. If the gap in the slider nylon clip is too large, the slider will not fit firmly onto the guide. If the gap is too large, compress the slider bracket around the nylon clip to eliminate any play or looseness between the slider and the guide. The slider should not have any play, but also should not drag as it moves along the guide.
7. Apply grease (wheel bearing type grease) to the front glass guide.
NOTE:
Be very careful that no grease gets on the window pad as this can cause streaking on the window.
8. Reinstall the glass guide. Pay close attention to your match marks to assure the guide is in the proper position.
9. Reinstall the front glass guide slider onto the slider stud mount on the glass. Make sure the nut is tight.
10. Remove the nuts (2) which attach the bottom of the glass to the regulator mechanism. Pull the regulator bracket out slightly then slide it so you can access each of the two mounting stud assemblies. Tighten each inner nut on the mounting studs, then reattach the regulator bracket to the window. Make sure each nut is tight.
11. Check all upstops, glass, and regulator mounting points for tightness and tighten if necessary.
12. Test drive the vehicle over the original test course to confirm repair. If the condition is eliminated, go to step 15.
13. If the problem still occurs, adjust glass slightly down or slightly outward in order to reduce the amount of pressure being applied on the glass by the A-pillar.
NOTE:
Be very careful when adjusting the glass. Misadjustment may cause wind or water leaks. Make sure the window operates properly with doors opened or closed.
14. Test drive vehicle to confirm repair.
15. Reinstall the speaker, speaker housing, and door trim panel.
16. Repeat procedure for the other side if necessary.
