Sunroof - Sunshade Material Delamination

NO: TSB-99-42A-003
DATE: February, 1999
MODEL: 1998-99 Eclipse

SUBJECT:
DELAMINATION OF SUNROOF SUNSHADE MATERIAL

PURPOSE

This bulletin contains procedures for repairing delaminated sunroof sunshade cover material.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Symptom

The sunshade material may peel off (delaminate) the sunshade(s). The delaminated material can have an unsightly appearance or could result in a binding condition when the sunshade is opened or closed. This condition can occur on either or both the front and/or rear sunroof sunshade.

Cause

Delamination is caused by insufficient adhesive.

Remedy

To correct this condition, the sunshade(s) must be removed, cleaned, and new adhesive applied to secure the material onto the shade.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1998 & 1999 Eclipse built between 11/97 and 8/98 equipped with factory installed power sunroof.

PROCEDURE

1. Open the sunroof to the vent position.

2. Using the instructions in section 42 of the service manual, remove the sunshade(s) from the vehicle.

3. Wet a lint free cloth with 3M Scotch-Grip solvent No. 8215, 8984 (or equivalent) and wipe delaminated surfaces to remove dirt, oil, etc.

4. Wait for five minutes or until solvent evaporates.

5. Apply 3M Scotch-Grip 1357 adhesive with a brush to the fabric and the plastic panel. Make sure 100% of the surface is covered.

6. Wait five minutes or until both surfaces are dry to the touch.

7. Apply five drops of Permabond at equal distance along each fold edge of the panel.

8. Bond the fabric panel edge to the plastic sunshade surface and apply firm pressure.

9. Referring again to the service manual section 42, reinstall sunshade assembly in sunroof. Slide the sunshade back and forth to make sure it functions smoothly.
