A/T Range Sensor (TRS) - Production Changes

NO: TSB-99-23-009
DATE: September, 1999
MODEL: 1999 Eclipse 2.0L Non-Turbo, A/T

SUBJECT
TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR (TRS) PRODUCTION CHANGES

PURPOSE

This bulletin contains information about a running production change affecting 1999 Eclipse vehicles equipped with the 2.0L non-turbo (420A) engine and automatic transaxle (F4AC1).

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

A new-style transaxle with a blade-type Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) went into production beginning on 10/24/98. A new-style vehicle harness connector for the new blade-type TRS was installed in the vehicles beginning with initial 1999 production, however, some early production 1999 model year vehicles (prior to 10/24/98, and VIN - XE060610) were built using the 1998-style transaxle (pin-type TRS). A special Jumper harness is used on these vehicles to adapt the new-style TRS connector on the vehicle harness to the 1998-style transaxle TRS. Additionally, parts mismatch can cause concerns when replacing the transaxle in a 1998 or earlier vehicle with the 1999-style transaxle.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1999 Eclipse 2.0L Non-Turbo equipped with F4AC1 automatic transaxle built before 10/24/98 and VIN - XE060610.

PROCEDURES

TRS Information

TRS Legend (Looking into the sensor connector)

NOTE:
The two different TRS types can be easily identified by looking at the connector terminals. The 1998 and earlier TRS had pin-type terminals The 1999 TRS has blade-type terminals.

CAUTION
The 1998 and 1999 TRS MUST NOT be interchanged. Although the 1998 TRS will fit in 1999 transaxle, the through-case diameters are different (the 1998 TRS is smaller). If the 1998 TRS is used with a 1999 transaxle, transaxle damage may occur as a result of moisture entering the transaxle housing through the TRS connector.

Repair Guidelines

Use the following guidelines to determine which components are required when making transaxle related repairs:

1999 VEHICLE NEEDS A TRS OR VALVE BODY

^ Inspect the TRS terminal type

^ If the TRS has pin terminals, order a 1998 TRS or valve body.

NOTE:
Make sure to check the VIN of the vehicle and The fit of the pin terminal type TRS in the transaxle to make sure a 1998-style TRS has not been installed into a 1999 transaxle (the TRS should fit exactly into the hole in the housing with no gaps around the edges). If you determine that the transaxle is a 1999, replace the TRS with the blade terminal type.

^ If the TRS has blade terminals, order a 1999 TRS or valve body.

1999 VEHICLE NEEDS A TRANSAXLE

^ Regardless of original transaxle type (1998/earlier-style, or 1999-style) order a 1999 transaxle for service on any 1999 vehicle.

NOTE:
If the 1999 vehicle was originally equipped with a 1998-style transaxle, the TRS adapter harness jumper must be removed so the vehicle harness will connect properly with the 1999 transaxle TRS.

1998 OR EARLIER VEHICLE NEEDS A TRS OR VALVE BODY

^ Order and use 1998 parts.

1998 OR EARLIER VEHICLE NEEDS A TRANSAXLE

^ If 1998 or earlier style transaxle is ordered and received, no further action is required for installation.

^ If a 1999 model transaxle is received for use in the 1998 or earlier vehicle, a TRS Harness Splice Kit (P/N: 05014473AA) must be ordered and installed so the vehicle harness will connect to the 1999 transaxle TRS.

NOTE:
The Harness Splice kit wire colors may not match the wire colors on the vehicle being repaired, however the functionality of the two types of TRS assemblies are the same. Install the Harness Splice Kit wire for wire and pin for pin as the original connector is wired.
