GENERATOR DRIVE BELT - REPLACEMENT FOR NOISE
PURPOSE
This bulletin has repair information for correcting a cold start generator drive belt noise condition on some 1998 Eclipse and Galant vehicles equipped with the 2.0L (4G63) and 2.4L (4G64) engines.
BACKGROUND
The generator drive belt on some affected vehicles may slip and make a squealing noise during cold start. A different generator belt is available to correct this condition.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
Any of the following vehicles with a VIN before 4A..........WE027083 in your dealer inventory should have the generator belt changed. For sold vehicles within this VIN range, replace the belt if the customer complains of belt noise during cold start.
1998 Eclipse & Eclipse Spyder 2.0L Turbo (4G63 engine) both FWD and AWD
1998 Eclipse Spyder 2.4L (4G64 engine)
1998 Galant 2.4L (4G64 engine)
PROCEDURE
Referring to Section 16 of the appropriate service manual, replace the original generator drive belt with part number MD186124.
(1) Loosen the pivot bolt nut and the lock bolt as shown in the illustration.
(2) Loosen the adjusting bolt and lift it upwards.
(3) Push the generator towards the engine to remove the drive belt.
Using the following values, adjust the generator drive belt tension. Refer to On Vehicle Service in Section 11A of the appropriate service manual if necessary.
^ Use a tension gauge to measure and adjust belt tension using the value of 588 - 784 N (132 - 176 lbs.).
^ Or, apply a force of 98N (22 lbs.) to the area indicated, measure and adjust deflection to 5.8 - 7.4 mm (.23 - .29 in.)
NOTE:
Always adjust the generator belt with the engine cold.
