Idle Speed: Testing and Inspection


1. Before inspection and adjustment set vehicle in the following conditions:
- Engine coolant temperature should be 80 - 95° C (176 - 203° F).
- Lights, electric cooling fan and all accessories are "OFF".
- Transaxle must be in Neutral (P range on vehicles with A/T).
2. Check the basic ignition timing. The standard value is 2 - 8° BTDC.
3. After turning the ignition switch to "OFF", connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
4. Start the engine and run it at idle.
5. Run the engine at idle for 2 minutes.
6. Check the idle speed. Select item No. 22 and take a reading of the idle speed. The curb idle speed is 650 - 850 RPM.

NOTE: The idle speed is controlled automatically by the idle air control system.

7. If the idle speed is outside the standard value, inspect the MFI components.
