Wheel Cylinder: Service and Repair


OVERHAUL

Rear Drum Brake Wheel Cylinder Assembly:




1. Remove the brake drum and lining assembly.
2. Remove the brake pipe connection.
3. Remove the wheel cylinder.
- Refer to the illustration and remove the following components:
4. Remove the boots.
5. Remove the piston assembly.
6. Remove the pistons and piston cups.
7. Remove the spring.
8. Remove the bleeder from the body.

Wheel Cylinder Assembly:




9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
- Lubricate the areas shown in the illustration.
- Use alcohol, DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid to clean the wheel cylinder and the piston and ensure that the hydraulic system is bled, refer to "Brake Bleeding"
Service and Repair
- Apply the DOT3 or DOT4 brake fluid to the piston cups and tool No. MB990619.

Set Piston Cup Into Piston Groove:




- Set the piston cup on tool No. MB990620 with the lip of the cup facing up, fit the cup onto the special tool, and then slide it down the outside of the tool into the piston groove.

CAUTION: In order to keep the piston cup from becoming twisted or slanted, slide the piston cup down the tool slowly and carefully, without stopping.
