Removal and Replacement
REMOVAL
Follow removal steps outlined in illustration.
NOTE: Removal service points as follows:
A. Propeller shaft assembly removal. (4)
1. Make mating marks on the differential companion flange and flange yoke and remove propeller shaft.
CAUTION: Remove the propeller shaft in a straight and level manner so as to ensure that the boot is not damaged through pinching.
NOTE: Damage to the boot can be avoided, and the work will be easier, if a piece of cloth or similar material is inserted in the boot.
2. Use the special tool as a cover to prevent the entry of foreign objects into the transfer case.
B. Spacer removal. (5)
The number of spacers depends on models. Check the number of spacers used and write it down for reference during reassembly.
INSPECTION
1. Check the sleeve yoke, center yoke and flange yoke for wear, damage or cracks.
2. Check the propeller shaft yokes for wear, damage or cracks.
3. Check the propeller shaft for bends, twisting or damage.
4. Check the universal joints for smooth operation in all directions.
5. Check the center bearing for smooth movement.
6. Check the center bearing mounting rubber for damage or deterioration.
PROPELLER SHAFT RUNOUT CHECK
Limit:
Front propeller shaft: 0.6 mm (.024 inch) or less
Center propeller shaft: 0.6 mm (.024 inch) or less
Rear propeller shaft: 0.6 mm (.024 inch) or less
INSTALLATION
Installation in reverse order as removal.
NOTE: Installation service points as follows:
A. Propeller shaft assembly installation. (4)
CAUTION: Be cautious to avoid damage to the oil seal lip of the transfer case.
1. Install the propeller shaft to the companion flange with the mating marks properly aligned.
CAUTION: Remove oil and grease before tightening the installation bolts, or the bolts will loosen.
