Camshaft, Rocker Arms & Shafts Replace
1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information, then remove battery and timing belt upper cover.Fig. 36 Camshaft Replacement:
2. Remove camshaft and oil seal in numbered sequence shown, Fig. 36, noting the following:

a. Use special tools to remove camshaft sprocket as shown, Fig. 12.
b. Before removing rocker arm and shaft assembly, install valve lash adjuster holder tools No. MD998443, or equivalent, to prevent adjusters from falling out.
3. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. When installing rocker arm and shaft assembly, temporarily tighten rocker shaft with bolt to prevent arms on intake side from pushing valves. Ensure rocker shaft springs are at right angles to plug guides.

b. Ensure rocker shaft notches are positioned as shown, Fig. 37.
c. Use seal installation tool No. MD998713, or equivalent, to install camshaft oil seal. Apply clean engine oil to oil seal lip prior to installation.
d. When installing distributor, rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder reaches camshaft position on compression stroke, then align mating marks on distributor housing and coupling key. Ensure distributor mounting stud bolt is aligned with slot in distributor flange.
e. Tighten all bolts and nuts to specifications; inspect and adjust ignition timing as necessary.
