M/T - F5MC1 Hard to Shift Into Reverse

NO.: TSB-96-22-001

DATE: March, 1996

MODEL: 1995-96 Eclipse

SUBJECT:
HARD TO SHIFT INTO REVERSE F5MC1 MANUAL TRANSAXLE

PURPOSE

On some affected vehicles, customers may complain of poor feel or difficulty when shifting into reverse gear. This is caused by a back-up lamp switch detent spring which is too strong. A new style back-up switch is available. It has a softer spring which requires less load by the 5th gear/reverse gear shift fork for activation. If you encounter this problem, remove the old style back-up lamp switch and replace with the new style switch listed in this bulletin.

VEHICLES AFFECTED

1995-96 Eclipse (non-turbo) models equipped with manual transaxle

PROCEDURE

1. Referring to the illustration, locate the back-up lamp switch. It can be accessed from the engine compartment by looking down at the top rear of the transmission between the battery and the air cleaner box.

2. Disconnect the back-up lamp wiring plug from the switch.

3. Using an extension and a 22 mm socket, remove the old switch and install the new One.

4. Reconnect the back-up lamp switch wiring plug.
