A/T - F4AC1 Clicking/Ratcheting Noise

NO.: TSB-96-23-021

DATE: October 1996

MODEL: 1995-96 Eclipse

SUBJECT: F4AC1 RATCHETING NOISE

PURPOSE

On affected vehicles, a "ratcheting" or clicking sound may be heard when shifting from "Park" into another gear, and/or when the vehicle is coming to a stop. The sound is produced during transaxle shift solenoid operation and is considered to be a normal condition. However, on some vehicles the sound may be more noticeable due to an air gap at the solenoid sound shield seal on the transaxle case.

This bulletin contains a procedure for sealing the air gaps between the solenoid sound shield and the transaxle case to reduce the noise.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The transaxle shift solenoid makes a "ratcheting" or clicking noise when shifting from "Park" into another gear and when the vehicle is coming to a stop. This is a normal characteristic of the transaxle and does not affect the transaxle's reliability or durability. Do not replace the solenoid for this noise complaint.

To reduce the noise as much as possible, seal the air gaps between the solenoid sound shield and the transaxle case as described in this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1995-96 Eclipse models equipped with 2.0L non-turbocharged engine and F4AC1 automatic transmission

PROCEDURE

If the noise is confirmed in Steps 1 - 3, perform the repair procedure in Steps 4 - 7.

1. Firmly apply the brakes.

2. With the engine running, shift the vehicle into gear.

3. If an excessive "ratcheting" or clicking noise is heard, continue with Step 4 to seal all air gaps between the solenoid sound shield and the transaxle case.

a. If the noise is not heard, confirm the conditions of the customer's noise complaint.

4. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

5. Clean the area where the solenoid sound shield meets the transaxle case. Use a steam cleaner if available.

CAUTION:
Do not use petroleum-based cleaners, as they may deteriorate the sound shield and/or the electrical components.

6. Blow the area dry with compressed air.

7. Apply RTV sealant to all air gaps between the solenoid sound shield and the transaxle case.
