A/T - F4AC1 Limp-In Mode/DTC's Set

NO.: TSB-96-23-006

DATE: March, 1996

MODEL: 1995-96 Eclipse A/T

SUBJECT:
F4AC1 A/T DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES

PURPOSE

On some affected vehicles, before the engine reaches normal operating temperature, the transaxle may go into 2nd gear limp-in" mode. This condition may cause the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) to set in the Transmission Control Module due to worn or damaged accumulator seals:

^ DTC 52 - Speed ratio default in 2nd and/or

^ DTC 54 - Speed ratio default in 4th

^ DTC 36 - Speed error immediately after a shift

In most cases, normal A/T operation will return after the engine is restarted. After these DTCs have been set, the 2nd gear "limp-in" condition may or may not be duplicated.

If DTCs 36, 52 and/or 54 have been set, follow the repair procedure in this bulletin to replace the underdrive clutch accumulator with a new aluminum accumulator and replace the accumulator seal rings with new teflon seal rings.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1995-96 Eclipse models equipped with F4AC1 automatic transaxle identification codes from XXX-2088-XXX to XXX-2404-XXX. The transaxle identification code is located on the transaxle case as shown.

PROCEDURE

1. Using the MUT-II scan tool, check for DTCs set in the Transmission Control Module.

a. If A/T DTCs other than 36, 52 and/or 54 are read by the scan tool, refer to the appropriate DTC troubleshooting chart(s) in Section 23 of the appropriate Eclipse service manual. Perform any necessary repairs.

b. After performing any necessary repairs for other DTCs, go to Step 2 for repairs for DTCs 36, 52 and/or 54.

NOTE:
Refer to Section 23G of the 1992-96 Automatic Transmission overhaul manual for F4AC1 component removal and installation procedures.

2. Remove the transaxle valve body.

3. Remove the retaining plate and the underdrive clutch accumulator. Discard the accumulator.

4. Install two new teflon seal rings to the new aluminum accumulator. Refer to the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.

5. Install the retaining plate and the new accumulator into the valve body.
