Recall - ABS Hydraulic Unit Support Cracks

NO: SR-94-063

DATE: September, 1994

MODEL: 1995 Eclipse

SUBJECT:
ABS HYDRAULIC UNIT SUPPORT REINFORCEMENT

This bulletin replaces ATIN-94-35-001.

PURPOSE

Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. (MMSA) is voluntarily recalling early production 1995 Eclipse ABS equipped vehicles to have a support added to the ABS hydraulic unit. A letter has been sent to all affected vehicle owners telling them to return their vehicles to their Mitsubishi Motors dealer to have an ABS hydraulic support added. A copy of this letter is shown in this bulletin.

DETAILS

On some early production 1995 Eclipses with ABS, the ABS hydraulic unit (HU) support may develop a stress crack after several years of vehicle use. This can cause the ABS HU to dislodge from its bracket, damaging the hydraulic lines. This condition can occur on some early production 1995 Eclipses with ABS, shipped on or before July 22, 1994. Some units may have already been repaired as directed by ATIN-94-35-001. To correct this condition, two reinforcement brackets must be installed in front of the ABS HU, on the HU support.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

Some 1995 Eclipse vehicles equipped with ABS distributed to dealers on or before July 22, 1994.

REQUIRED OPERATIONS

1. Install two reinforcement brackets in front of the ABS HU.

PARTS INFORMATION

The parts required for this procedure (Bracket A, p/n MR217014; Bracket B, p/n MR217015) are not stocked in the PDCs. Securing Bolt, p/n MS240126, is also required for bracket installation. If the quantity of parts supplied with ATIN-94-35-001 was not sufficient, please contact your District Service Manager regarding additional parts.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Submit as Recall Claim Type "C", Menu option "E-5" on your Diamond Network System. Do not submit as a "W" claim.

Required Operation

Campaign Labor Operation: C9501KXX

Labor Time Allowance: 1.0 hours

No parts are allowed to be entered on the claim.

A sample required operation work claim is shown.

1. Apply 2"-wide masking tape to the front bumper fascia, along the entire length of the left-side headlight. This will prevent damage to the fascia while performing the procedure.

2. Mark the position of the headlight's vertical adjustment bubble. Then, remove the top and rear bolts securing the left-side headlight assembly to the body.

3. Insert the flat edge of a plastic or wooden trim stick (approximately 3/4" wide, 1/4" thick, and 8" long) between the lower edge of the headlight and fascia. Twist the trim stick 1/4 turn to depress the fascia and allow access to the lower headlight mounting bolt.

4. Using a drive extension and a 10 mm flexible socket (preferably a magnetic socket), remove the lower headlight mounting bolt through the opening between the fascia and headlight. Remove the trim stick after removing the bolt.

5. From under the vehicle, disconnect the main headlight wiring harness. Then, with the vehicle on the ground, carefully remove the headlight assembly, making sure the tab on the lower edge of the headlight does not damage the fascia. Disconnect the turn signal wiring harness from the headlight assembly.

6. The reinforcement bracket kit consists of three parts:

Bracket A (p/n MR217014)
Bracket B (p/n MR217015)
Securing Bolt (p/n MS240126)

7. Remove and retain the front HU support bolt. This bolt will be used again in Step 11.

8. Attach bracket A to the HU support using the securing bolt in the Kit. Place this bolt in the lower hole of bracket A. Attach bracket A to the HU support using the front HU support bolt hole.

9. Using a 5/16" drill bit, drill a hole through the upper hole of bracket A, and through the HU support.

WARNING:
To avoid damaging the hydraulic lines, do not allow the drill bit to penetrate farther than the HU support.

10. Loosen the bolt securing bracket A to gain access to the 5/16" hole just drilled into the HU support. De-burr the hole and apply primer. Correctly re-position bracket A and tighten the securing bolt 14 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).

11. Hold bracket B behind the HU support (on the HU-side) and align its weld-nut with the 5/16" hole. Install the bolt removed in Step B through the upper hole of bracket A, the 5116" hole, and the weld-nut of bracket B. Before tightening the bolt, make sure the two other holes on bracket B are aligned with the two existing headlight attaching holes on the HU support. Tighten the bolt 14 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).

12. Attach the turn signal wiring harness to the headlight assembly. Reinstall the headlight assembly, making sure the tab on the lower edge does not damage the fascia. From under the vehicle, attach the main headlight wiring harness.

13. Reinsert the trim stick between the fascia and lower edge of the headlight (as previously done in Step 3).

If a magnetic socket is not available, place a small piece of tape on the bolt head of the lower headlight mounting bolt and insert the bolt into a 10 mm swivel socket. (This will allow the bolt to remain in the socket until it is attached.)

Using a drive extension, install the bolt in the lower headlight mounting hole. Tighten the bolt 5 Nm (44 in. lbs.). Remove the trim stick.

NOTE:
Step 13 is difficult to perform and requires good manual dexterity. To ensure safe headlight operation, the lower headlight mounting bolt MUST be installed.

14. Align the top headlight tab with the mark made in Step 4. Install the top and rear headlight bolts, tightening each bolt 5 Nm (44 in. lbs.).

15. Remove the masking tape from the fascia, and check for normal aim/operation of the headlight.
