SUBJECT:
STEERING DRIFT DIAGNOSIS AND CORRECTION
This bulletin supercedes Technical Service Bulletin TSB-96-33A-001 issued January, 1996 to update the flowchart and to include 1995-96 Galant models produced in Japan.
BACKGROUND
Some affected vehicles may have a steering drift condition (tendency to drift to one side) when the steering wheel is released. The drift can be to either the left or right side of the road. Steering drift can be caused by one or more of the following conditions:
^ Crosswinds
^ Road crown
^ Incorrect tire inflation
^ Tire construction
^ Wheels out of alignment
^ Worn suspension parts
Steering drift may also occur if the vehicle's tires are different than the originally equipped tires.
Thorough diagnosis is essential for correct repair of steering drift. The flowchart in this bulletin contains the diagnosis steps that must be followed in order to properly correct steering drift on affected vehicles.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
^ 1994-97 Galant produced in U.S.
^ 1995-96 Galant produced in Japan
^ 1995-97 Eclipse
NOTE:
During production of the affected models, different lower compression arm types (standard and offset) were installed. The Original Equipment chart identifies the lower compression arms installed during vehicle production. It is important to correctly identify the type of lower compression arm on the vehicle before beginning steering drift diagnosis.
PARTS INFORMATION
IMPORTANT:
Refer to the "Original Equipment" chart to determine the type of lower compression arm that was installed on the vehicle during production.
* Galants built 02/93 through 09/93 have a small ball joint on the outboard side of the lower compression arm. Stud, has 12 X 1.25 mm thread; nut requires 19 mm wrench.
