Turbocharger: Service and Repair

Remove turbocharger in numbered sequence, Fig.115, noting the following:

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain engine cooling system into a suitable container as follows:
a. Place temperature control lever in hot position.
b. Carefully remove radiator cap.
c. Remove radiator drain plug.
3. Drain engine oil.
4. Disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector, then using oxygen sensor socket tool No. MD998748, or equivalent, and an offset box-end wrench, remove oxygen sensor.
5. Remove power steering pump from bracket with hoses attached, then secure pump aside with a piece of wire.
6. Remove turbocharger assembly with water pipes A and B and oil pipe attached. After disconnecting oil pipe, ensure foreign material does not enter oil passage hole of turbocharger.
7. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Prior to installing turbocharger assembly, pour a small quantity of clean engine oil into oil supply pipe fitting hole in turbocharger.
b. Clean alignment surfaces of turbocharger.
CAUTION:
Do not allow gasket or other foreign material to enter oil passage hole.
c. Use new gaskets, locknuts and O-rings.
d. Install oxygen sensor using oxygen sensor socket tool No. MD998748, or equivalent, and an offset box-end wrench, then connect oxygen sensor electrical connector.
