Secondary Air Injection System - DTC 51 Set
NO.: TSB-96-17-002DATE: July, 1996
MODEL: 1995 Eclipse
SUBJECT:
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE 51
PURPOSE
Improper operation of the secondary air injection solenoid may cause Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 51 to set in the ECM. If DTC 51 is read with the scan tool, the secondary air injection solenoid and possibly its wiring harness and connector may have corrosion contamination. Perform the following diagnosis procedures:
- Check the operation of the secondary air injection solenoid as described in this bulletin. Install a new, improved secondary air injection solenoid if necessary.
- Inspect the solenoid connector and wiring harness for corrosion. If necessary, repair the connector and/or harness using a newly available repair kit listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1995 Eclipse non turbo charged models produced before 6/1/95
PROCEDURE
1. Check the operation of the secondary air injection solenoid as shown:
a. Remove the secondary air injection solenoid.
b. Connect a hand vacuum pump to the solenoid nipple.
c. Use a jumper wire to connect a solenoid valve terminal to the battery positive terminal.
d. Test airflow between A and B by connecting and disconnecting the negative battery terminal side jumper wire, and applying 67 kPa (20 in. Hg) of vacuum.
Test results should be:
JUMPER WIRE VACUUM STATUS AIRFLOW BETWEEN A AND B
Connected Leaks gradually Air flows as long as vacuum is maintained
Disconnected Maintained No airflow
e. Measure the resistance between the solenoid terminals. Specification is 33-39 ohms at 20° C (68° F).
2. If airflow and/or the solenoid terminal resistance is not within specification, install a new, improved secondary air injection solenoid listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.
3. Inspect the secondary air injection solenoid connector and the wiring harness. If there is evidence of corrosion, remove all corrosion and use the repair kit listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin to repair/replace damaged connector and/or harness components.
