Engine - Intermittent Misfire

SUBJECT:
INTERMITTENT ENGINE MISFIRE
PURPOSE
Some affected vehicles may experience an intermittent single cylinder misfire condition. The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may come on and a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) may be set.
Perform the inspections and diagnosis procedures described in this bulletin. If necessary, replace the spark plugs with new dielectric plugs listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1995-96 Eclipse models equipped with 2.0L non-turbocharged DOHC engine produced before 6/10/96
PROCEDURE
1. Perform the following inspections and diagnosis procedures:
a. Confirm that the following parts are operating properly. Also confirm that their related wiring is undamaged and connections are good. Make any necessary repairs and/or parts replacement.
^ Ignition coil
^ Spark plug cables
^ Fuel pump
^ Fuel relay
^ Fuel filter
^ Fuel pressure regulator
^ Fuel injectors
^ Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
^ EGR system components
b. Using the MUT-II scan tool, check for any DTCs that may have set. Refer to the appropriate Eclipse service manual for DTC diagnosis procedures and repair information.
2. If diagnosis in Step 1 reveals poor spark plug operation in any cylinder, replace with new dielectric spark plugs in all cylinders. Torque to 28 Nm (20 ft-lbs). The spark plug gap specification is 1.22 - 1.35 mm (0.048 - 0.053 in.).
a. If you replaced the spark plugs, go to Step 4.
b. If not, continue with Step 3.
3. Remove each spark plug and inspect for damage.
a. If any plugs are damaged, discard all plugs. Replace all plugs with the new dielectric spark plugs listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin. Torque to 28 Nm (20 ft-lbs). The spark plug gap specification is 1.22 - 1.35 mm (0.048 - 0.053 in.).
b. If no plugs are damaged, reinstall plugs.
4. Inspect spark plug cables for evidence of arcing (e.g., black marks, etc.) or other damage. Replace any damaged cables.
5. Using a ball-point pen, enter "SPARK PLUG," the replacement spark plug part number, this TSB number (TSB-97-16-003), your dealer code, and the current date on the Engine Compartment Label.
6. Carefully remove all dirt and oil from the vacant area shown on the underside of the hood. Affix the Engine Compartment label in the area shown.
