Malfunction Indicator Lamp: Description and Operation

PURPOSE/OPERATION
The check engine/malfunction indicator lamp provides a visual signal to the operator when a critical system is not working as it should. Depending on the malfunction the powertrain control module usually locks itself into a set of default parameters to allow the vehicle to be driven until the condition is corrected.
