Rear Speaker - Buzz or Rattle
NO.: TSB-95-54-004DATE: November, 1995
MODEL: 1995-96 Eclipse
SUBJECT:
REAR SPEAKER BUZZ OR RATTLE
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
On affected vehicles, a buzzing or rattling noise may be heard from the rear speaker (rear quarter trim) area when the audio system is being used. The noise may occur more frequently with high bass volume. If the speaker is otherwise operating properly, the noise may be caused by the rear quarter trim clip vibrating against the vehicle body. Installing foam tape between the rear quarter trim and the body at the clip locations should eliminate the noise.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
1995-96 Eclipse models produced before 8/21/95.
PROCEDURE
1. Ask the customer when the buzz or rattle occurs. Confirm volume bass and treble settings.
2. Duplicate the noise on the vehicle to determine which side is the source.
3. Remove the rear quarter trim panel from the suspect side of the vehicle. Remove the speaker from its mounting bracket without disconnecting the speaker. Turn the audio system on, set the balance and fader features to that speaker, and check again for buzz or rattle.
a. If the noise comes from the speaker, replace the speaker. Verify that the speaker mounting screws and nuts are securely tightened. Then go to Step 4.
b. If the noise is not heard:
^ Check the speaker wiring harness for interference with the body.
^ Insulate the harness as necessary.
^ Reinstall the speaker. Verify that the speaker mounting screws and nuts are securely tightened.
Then go to Step 4.
4. Obtain 3/4 inch wide foam tape (3M p/n 06375 tape # 4508 or equivalent). Prepare the tape as follows:
a. Cut five 35 mm (approx. 1-1/2 inch) lengths of the foam tape.
b. Cut a 20 mm (approx. 3/4 inch) slit in the center of each piece of tape.
5. Install the foam tape over the five slot openings in the body behind the rear quarter trim panel, with the slit in each tape parallel to the slot.
6. Reinstall the speaker. Verify that the buzz or rattle is eliminated during audio operation.
7. Reinstall the rear quarter trim panel and verify that the buzz or rattle is eliminated during audio operation.
