Inspection Before Disassembly

1. Secure differential case assembly in a vise so that differential right side gear is facing upward. When securing in vise, ensure not to hold differential case assembly to tightly.

Fig. 37 Feeler Gauge Insertion:

2. Insert a 0.0012 inch feeler gauge at two places between differential case B and right thrust washer, Fig. 37. Do not insert a feeler gauge in oil groove of differential case B.

Fig. 38 Right Side Gear Inspection:

3. Insert tool A of tool kit No. MB990988, or equivalent, at spline part of differential right side gear and ensure right side gear rotates, Fig. 38.
4. Replace on of the 0.0012 inch feeler gauge with a 0.0035 inch feeler gauge.
5. Insert tool A of tool kit No. MB990988, or equivalent, at spline part of differential right side gear and ensure right side gear does not rotate, Fig. 38.
6. If clearance in thrust direction of side gear is within 0.0012-0.0035 inch, backlash of differential gear is normal.
7. If clearance in thrust direction of side gear is not 0.0012-0.0035 inch, remove differential case A and make adjustment by adjusting thickness of left thrust washer.
