Crankshaft Position Sensor: Testing and Inspection

INSPECTION

Using Scan tool

Check Item: Crankshaft Position Sensor.
Data Display: Cranking speed.
Check Conditions: Engine cranking and tachometer connected (check on and off of primary current of Ignition Coil by tachometer).
- Compare cranking speed and scan tool reading; Indicated speeds should agree.

Check Item: Crankshaft Position Sensor.
Data Display: Idle speed.
Check Conditions: Engine running at idle and idle position switch ON.
- With coolant temperature -20°C (-4°F): 1,500 - 1,700 rpm.
- With coolant temperature 0°C (32°F): 1,350 - 1,550 rpm.
- With coolant temperature 20°C (68°F): 1,200 - 1,500 rpm.
- With coolant temperature 40°C (104°F): 1,000 - 1,200 rpm.
- With coolant temperature 80°C (176°F): 650 - 850 rpm.

Harness Inspection Procedure

1. Measure the power supply voltage.
- Connector disconnected.
- Ignition Switch ON.
- Voltage should read system voltage.

If OK - go to step 2.
If not OK - repair the harness (H 4 - Ignition switch [IG1]).

2. Check for continuity of the ground circuit.
- Connector disconnected.

If OK - go to step 3.
If not OK - repair the harness (H 1 - C50-4 1).

3. Check for continuity of the ground circuit.
- Connector disconnected.
- Ignition switch ON.
- Voltage should be 4.8 - 5.2 volts.

If OK - END
If not OK - Repair the harness (H2 - C50-5 15).

Troubleshooting Hints
1. If unexpected shocks are felt during driving or the engine stalls suddenly, shake the Crankshaft Position Sensor harness. If this causes the engine to stall, check for poor contact of the sensor connector.
2. If the tachometer reads 0 rpm when the engine is cranked, check for faulty Crankshaft Position Sensor, broken timing belt or ignition system problems.
3. If the engine can be run at idle even if the Crankshaft Position Sensor reading is out of specification, check the followings:
- Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor.
- Faulty Idle Speed Control Motor.
- Poorly adjusted reference idle speed.
