Valve Guide: Service and Repair

1. Press old valve guide from cylinder head toward lower surface using a suitable pushrod and press.

2. Ream each valve guide bore in cylinder head to outer diameter of replacement valve guide, Fig. 8. Never use a valve guide of same size as removed guide.
3. Press fit new valve guide into top of cylinder head until a protrusion of 0.579-0.602 inch is obtained.
4. Note that valve guides for intake and exhaust are of different lengths. Intake guides are 1.791 inches long; exhaust guides are 1.988 inches long.
5. After installation of new valve guides, insert valve and ensure it slides freely, then check for proper clearance. If clearance is not correct, ream valve guide until proper clearance is obtained. Refer to Valve, In for stem to guide clearance.
