SUBJECT:
REMANUFACTURED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PROGRAM
This bulletin replaces TSB-94-23-005 dated October, 1994, which should be discarded. The changes include updated part numbers and reference to Parts Bulletin PB 942311-003.
PURPOSE
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. (MMSA) has reached an agreement to work with Component Remanufacturing Specialists (CR5) to implement an automatic transmission remanufacturing program. This bulletin provides the guidelines for this program and explains how they should be implemented into your service operation. The program will apply to the illustrated vehicles and automatic transaxles.
Refer to Parts Bulletin PB942311-003 for details on this reman program. For transmission diagnostic procedures for this program, refer to the MMSA Technical Training Program entitled Diagnosis for Remanufactured A/T Program.
WARRANTY REPAIR
Under the remanufactured automatic transmission program, dealer repairs are limited to those shown in the adjacent table. Basically, all internal transmission repairs other than the valve body should be corrected by replacing the transmission with a remanufactured unit. Complete diagnostic procedures for transmissions in this program can be found in a new MMSA Technical Training Program entitled Diagnosis for Remanufactured A/T Program. A copy of this publication has been shipped to all Service Technicians who are registered in the Mitsubishi Tech Team Program. This publication provides diagnostic trouble charts that supersede the ones in the service manual. It also supersedes the previous publication entitled KM175 Diagnosis and Repair.
NON - WARRANTY REPAIR
Remanufactured transmissions can be used for vehicles that are out of warranty if the customer agrees to the repair and if the core is properly returned to CR5. Internal automatic transmission components will be stocked by the MMSA Parts Distribution Centers to cover those non-warranty repairs in which transmission overhaul is preferred by the customer.
REMANUFACTURED A/T ORDERING PROCESS
If diagnosis of the vehicle reveals that the automatic transmission must be replaced with a remanufactured unit, follow the steps below to obtain a unit and to return the core.
NOTE:
This process supersedes the process described in TSB 91-23014 dated July 1991 for the KM175 automatic transaxle.
1. Place an order with your facing PDC for a remanufactured transmission.
2. When the unit arrives, verify that it is identical to the one being removed.
3. Remove the old transaxle and install the remanufactured unit into the vehicle.
CAUTION:
It is critical that the trans cooler be flushed to ensure that the remanufactured transmission is not contaminated with the residual fluid that is in the cooler.
4. Drain all fluids from the removed transmission, install the torque converter and converter retention bracket, install all shipping plugs, and place the transmission back into the case in which the remanufactured transmission was shipped.
5. Ensure all components are returned and attached properly to the transmission e.g. dipstick, dipstick tube, inhibitor switch, pulse generators, etc. Transmissions received at the remanufacturing facility with missing and/or disassembled components will result in a warranty claim debit to the dealer. The adjacent list contains the debit amounts that will be incurred if the transmission is not returned properly.
6. Complete the Diagnostic Worksheet/Core Tag included with the remanufactured transmission and attach it to its bell housing. Maintain a copy of the Diagnostic Worksheet/Core Tag for your records.
7. Prepare the shipping carton for shipment to the Remanufacturing Facility.
8. Using the supplied and pre-addressed shipping label and bill of lading, ship the transmission to the remanufacturing facility:
Component Remanufacturing Specialists
15 Arrow Road
Ramsey, NJ 07446
You must use the designated carrier for your area.
NOTE:
The old unit must be returned as soon as possible. Do not wait for a letter from MMSA for a warranty claim number. You have 30 days from the date of repair to return the old unit whether or not it was replaced under warranty. The entire claim will be debited if C.R.S. does not receive the replace unit within 30 days of the repair.
REMANUFACTURED A/T LIMITED WARRANTY
The remanufactured automatic transmission is covered by the unexpired term of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, or if more favorable, for the Parts and Accessories Warranty of 12 months 112,000 miles whichever occurs first.
NOTE:
The basic limited warranty for automatic transaxies in 1985-1987 Galants is 7 years /70,000 miles. Non-MMSA vehicles, regardless of mileage are only covered by a 12 month /12,000 miles Parts and Accessories Warranty.
