Throttle Position Sensor: Adjustments

CAUTION: Complete basic idle speed adjustment betore the throttle position sensor is adjusted.

1. Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
2. If a scan tool is not used, perform the following operation.
- Disconnect the connectors of the throttle position sensor and connect the test harness set (special tool) between the disconnected connectors.

- Connect the digital Voltmeter between sensor ourput terminal (2) and sensor ground terminal (4).
3. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position (but do not start the engine) and hold the switch for more than 1 5 seconds.

NOTE: Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position, and the idle speed control plunger extends to the fast idle opening. In 15 seconds, the plunger will contract to stop at the initial position.

Initial position: Position corresponding to idle position where idle speed control motor position sensor output Voltage of 0.9 volt is indicated.

4. Check the throttle position sensor output Voltage. When a scan tool is used, select Item No.14 to read the throttle position sensor output Voltage.

Standard value: 0.48 - 0.52 Volts

5. If the output Voltage is not within the specified range, loosen the throttle position sensor mounting bolts and turn the throttle position sensor body to make adjustment. Tighten the bolts securely after adjustment.

NOTE: Turning the throttle position sensor body clockwise increases the output Voltage. During adjustment of the throttle position sensor, the diagnostic trouble code of idle speed control motor position sensor trouble may be output. This is not idle speed control motor position sensor trouble but is caused by deviation of throttle position sensor output Voltage from normal Voltage (at idling) during rotation of the throttle position sensor body.

6. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position.
7. If the diagnostic trouble code is output while adjusting the throttle position sensor, use a scan tool to erase the diagnostic trouble code, or disconnect the battery cable from the negative terminal of the battery for more than 10 seconds and then reconnect the cable. (This will cancel the memory of the failure code due to throttle position sensor adjustment.)
