Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
1. Release fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information.2. Drain cooling system into an appropriate container.

3. Remove cylinder head and gasket in numbered sequence as shown, Fig. 19, noting the following:
a. Mark radiator hose and hose clamps prior to removal.
b. After placing a wooden block between jack and engine oil pan, jack up vehicle and remove engine mount bracket. Ensure pressure is applied evenly on engine oil pan.

c. Prior to removing timing belt, turn crankshaft clockwise and align timing marks, Fig. 20.
d. Mark direction of rotation on timing belt if belt is to be reused.
e. Remove camshaft sprocket with timing belt attached and secure timing belt in lower cover, ensuring pressure is kept on crankshaft pulley.

f. Using socket tool No. MD998360, or equivalent, remove cylinder head bolts in sequence as shown, Fig. 21.
4. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Clean both cylinder head and cylinder block gasket surfaces.

b. Install gasket with identification mark toward cylinder head, Fig. 22.

c. Using sequence shown in Fig. 23, torque cylinder head bolts in two or three steps to 51-54 ft. lbs.
d. Install intake and exhaust manifolds and gaskets. Tighten bolts to specifications.
