Camshaft: Service and Repair

1. Release fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove breather hose and PCV hose from rocker cover.





4. Remove oil filler cap attaching bolt, then the oil filler cap assembly, Fig. 61. Remove rocker cover, then the gasket.
5. Rotate crankshaft in normal direction of rotation until No. 1 cylinder is at top dead center and camshaft and crankshaft timing marks are aligned.
6. Place a chalk mark between timing belt and camshaft sprocket, then after removing camshaft sprocket bolt, separate sprocket from camshaft leaving belt in place on sprocket. Secure sprocket and belt on lower timing cover ensuring sprocket does not disengage from belt and fall. Do not rotate crankshaft after sprocket is removed from camshaft.
7. Prior to removal of rocker arm and rocker shaft assembly, install auto-lash adjuster holder tool No. MD998443, or equivalent, to ensure auto-lash adjuster is not allowed to fall.
8. Remove semicircular packing, then the oil seal.
9. Remove rocker arm and shaft assembly, then the auto-lash adjuster.
10. Remove camshaft.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:








a. Install the rocker shafts with notches up and toward the front bearing cap. The overall length of the left (intake) rocker shaft is 356.5 mm (14.04 in.); that of right (exhaust) rocker shaft is 350 mm (13.78 in.).

b. Install bearing cap Nos. 2, 3 and 4. Caps can be identified by front mark, cap number and rocker cover attaching bolt hole, Fig. 63.

c. Install wave washers as shown, Fig. 64.
d. Use suitable gasket sealant for valve cover installation.
