Removal and Replacement

1. Disconnect battery cables, then remove battery.
2. Drain transmission fluid into a suitable container.
3. Remove air cleaner hoses and air cleaner assembly.

4. Remove transaxle in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 27 and 28, noting the following:
a. Remove clutch release cylinder bolt and oil line bracket and secure to body side without disconnecting the oil line.
b. Loosen ball joint stud nut, then break ball joint loose from steering knuckle using a suitable tool.
c. Loosen tie rod end stud nut, then disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle using a suitable tool.
d. Remove right-hand driveshaft by placing a suitable pry bar between the transaxle and the driveshaft. To avoid damaging oil seal, do not insert screwdrivers more than necessary.
e. Secure driveshaft to body, keeping as far away as possible from transaxle case.
f. Support transaxle assembly suing a suitable jack then move transaxle to the right and slowly lower transaxle from vehicle.
5. Reverse numbered sequence shown in Fig. 27 and 28 to install transaxle, noting the following:
a. Install driveshaft with the inboard joint of the driveshaft is straight relative to the transaxle.
b. Align serrations and securely insert driveshaft into transaxle.
c. Ensure starter ground cable connections.
d. Fill transaxle with fluid, install battery and air cleaner. Check for proper operation of transaxle.
