1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove battery and battery tray.
3. Remove air cleaner assembly.
4. Drain transaxle fluid.
5. Remove transaxle assembly in numbered sequence shown in Figs. 42, noting the following:
a. Loosen, but do not remove, tie rod end assembly nut using steering linkage puller tool No. MB991113, or equivalent. Ensure special tool cord is tied to nearby parts to prevent slippage.
b. Loosen, but do not remove, lower ball joint nut using steering linkage puller tool No. MB991113, or equivalent. Tie cord of special tool to nearby parts to prevent slippage.
c. Use puller tool No. MB990241-01, or equivalent, to push right-hand driveshaft from front hub.
d. Insert a pry bar between transaxle case and driveshaft and pry driveshafts from transaxle. Do not pull on driveshaft as damage to the joint will result.
e. Remove left-hand driveshaft by lightly tapping driveshaft joint case with a plastic hammer.
f. Secure driveshaft away from the transaxle case using suitable rope to prevent damage.
g. Mark location of propeller shaft on rear axle flange, then remove attaching bolts from propeller shaft at rear axle flange.
h. Disconnect propeller shaft center support bearing and bracket.
i. Pull propeller shaft from transfer assembly.
j. Remove transfer assembly attaching bolts then the transfer assembly.
6. Reverse numbered sequence shown in Figs. 42 to install transaxle, noting the following:
a. After installing wheel, lower vehicle to ground and finally tighten wheel bearing nut. If position of cotter pin holes do not match, torque nut to 188 ft. lbs. maximum to align holes.
b. Ensure all electrical connections and ground connections are clean and tight.
c. Refill transaxle with fluid.
d. Ensure proper operation of selector and control cables. Adjust, if necessary.
