Vechicle - Environmental Labeling Requirements

NO.: TSB-93-00-010

DATE: November, 1993

MODEL: All 1994

SUBJECT:
ENVIRONMENTAL LABELING REQUIREMENTS

PURPOSE

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has adopted a rule requiring labeling of all products manufactured with or containing class 1 ozone depleting substances (1, 1, 1-trichloroethane, CFC-12, CFC-13). Dealers are required to leave such labels on the vehicle until after the vehicle has been sold to the consumer. Other vehicle manufacturers will have similar labels on their vehicles.

DETAILS

Beginning with 1994 model year vehicle production, all MMSA vehicles will have a label on the windshield or driver side window stating vehicles were manufactured with 1,1,1-trichloroethane. This substance is used by most manufacturers in vehicle production as a cleaning agent. Mitsubishi will phase out the use of this substance around August, 1994. At that time this label will not be required.

In addition, 1994 vehicles equipped with an air conditioning system will have a second label which states the vehicle contains CFC.

The 1994 Eclipse is the only MMSA vehicle sold which uses air conditioning refrigerant CFC-12. This label will be included in the Eclipse air conditioning installation kit and should be available in a few weeks.

All other 1994 vehicles will have air conditioning systems which use R134a. The expansion valves in these systems contain CFC-13 until approximately November, 1993. After which time the label will no longer be required.

Replacement parts manufactured with or containing a class 1 ozone depleting substance will be labeled on the packaging.

MARKETING IMPACT

Please explain to customers who are concerned about the warning labels, that all vehicle manufacturers are required to display these warning labels on their vehicles if they contain, or use in manufacturing, a class 1 ozone depleting substance.

Mitsubishi Motors has taken and will continue to take steps to meet or exceed compliance with all environmental regulations in a timely and responsible manner.
