A/T - New End-Play and Preload Measurement

SOURCE: Mitsubishi Tech Talk Article January/February 2005

TITLE: New End-Play and Preload Measurement Procedures

APPLIES TO: All Models with Automatic Transmission

SERVICE TIP:

New procedures for measuring end-play and preloads for both manual and automatic transmissions using plastigage instead of the old, but still acceptable procedures using solder are shown below

1.Place plastigage (approx. 10mm long) at the measurement spot.

2.Fit the thinnest adjustment spacer.

3.Install the mating part and torque to spec.

4.If the plastigage did not flatten, install a thicker spacer and repeat steps 2 & 3.

5.Remove the mating part.

6.To determine the proper clearance for spacer selection, measure the width of the plastigage (at the widest part) flattened by the spacer using the scale printed on the plastigage package.
