Trailing Arm: Service and Repair

Fig. 35 Training Arm Replacement:





1. Remove trailing arm in numbered sequence as shown, Fig. 35, noting the following:
a. Using end yoke holder tool No. MB990767-01, or equivalent, secure rear axle shaft then remove self-locking nut.
b. Using axle puller and slide hammer tools, No. MB990211-01 and MB990241-01, or equivalents, remove rear axle hub.
c. Using ball joint remover tool No. MB991113-01, or equivalent, loosen and disconnect ball joint from knuckle. Loosen, but do not remove ball joint nut.
2. Replace connecting rod as follows:
a. Remove trailing arm bushing.
b. Remove connecting rod nut and bolt.

c. Install rod remover and installer tool No. MB9911254, or equivalent, as shown in Fig. 37.
d. Apply lubricant to sliding points (A). Install bolt (B) in trailing arm.
e. Using a suitable wrench, turn screw (C) to remove connecting rod.

f.Installation of special tool should be performed with screw shaft and guide shaft center lines oriented as shown, Fig. 38.
g. Apply soapy water to rubber portion of connecting rod, then reverse procedure to install connecting rod.
3. Reverse procedure to install.
